Randall Cunningham's young son dies in tragic accident
Source: Yahoo! Sports

Terrible news for former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham and his family - Cunningham's two-year-old son Christian drowned on Tuesday afternoon in the family's backyard hot tub at Cunningham's Nevada home. Las Vegas Police Lieutenant Dennis Flynn has been quoted by news outlets as saying that it was an accident. According to initial reports, Cunningham was not at home Tuesday afternoon when the child was found, and that an unnamed woman tried to resuscitate the child after finding him at about 4:30 p.m. She called 911 at 4:45, and the child was taken to St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena campus, where he passed away.

Cunningham, now 47 years old, is an ordained minister in Las Vegas. According to a family friend who talked with ABC News, about 100 people came to the Cunningham home when the news broke to sing, pray, and cry with the family. Cunningham is the pastor of a church he founded called Remnant Ministries. He has performed baptisms in that same hot tub, according to reports.

Cunningham, who passed for 29,979 yards and 207 touchdowns in his 16-year NFL career from 1985 to 2001, made four Pro Bowls and is considered the prototype of the modern mobile quarterback. He played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, and Baltimore Ravens. He took his son onto the field last year (pictured above) when he was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame at a halftime ceremony.

1. So very, very, very sad.
The pain is beyond relief.

Brought to mind the tragic death of Eric Clapton's son.

9. My gosh, I hope he and his wife can get through this together.
How horrifying. They have to look back at the natural question - why the 2yo got into the hot tub. The truth is all kids get around parents some time.

My heart goes out to them.

13. Sadly, most people don't keep them covered.
I'm guilty of this myself. I have a freestanding hot tub behind my house with an EZ Lift cover that included four toddler locks. I honestly don't think I've locked it more than once or twice in the years I've owned it. I usually fold the cover down to for insulation and to keep leaves out of it, but I don't even know where the keys are. I think I'll go find them tonight.

Nobody thinks it will happen to them.

11. so sad
Condolonces to the family. :(

We have our 4 year old daughter in a swimming/water safety class right now. I wish we would have done it earlier. I cannot stress enough how important it is for kids to learn to swim as early as possible.
