Disaster Model Shows 13% Chance Of A Hurricane Hitting Gulf Spill

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Disaster models suggest a 13% chance of a hurricane hitting the Gulf oil spill this year, with the odds of a direct hit rising amid an active storm season, according to a company that predicts catastrophes.

The models indicate a 7% chance that an intense storm of Category 3 or higher hits the slick, bringing a strong storm surge and "the potential to carry tar deposits far inland," wrote Risk Management Solutions in a report released Wednesday.

That's higher than in an average storm season, when there would be a 4% chance of a direct hit from a strong storm, the company wrote.

1. We don't even NEED a "direct hit".
Anything Cat 2 or higher within 250 miles, or any Cat 4 or higher within 500 miles would be a total disruption, I'd think. Hell, even this stupid little minor hurricane headed for the Texas/Mexico border is causing problems.
