Florida Republican leaders drawing up Arizona-styled anti-immigrant legislation
Source: St. Petersburg Times

Florida Republican leaders have begun crafting anti-illegal-immigrant legislation modeled after an Arizona law that has incited widespread protests and fueled national and international debate over U.S. immigration policies.

Under the proposed bill, police would have broad power under state law to ask suspects for proof of legal residency, said Rep. William Snyder, a Republican from Stuart who plans to introduce the legislation in November.

"We have significant components from the Arizona bill that I plan to incorporate," he said. "We have the beginnings of it."

...

"This is a human right issue," he said. "They don't enjoy the same rights and privileges that you and I do. The solution is to enforce the laws that currently exist and to discourage people from coming here to 'find a better life' when in fact they just come here and are victimized."

1. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele
announced today that through efforts of the Tea Baggers and right wing lunacy clubs
that they have raised $10 million to start the effort of dismantling the Statue of Liberty
and shipping it back to whence it came. He was quoted as stating "We do not need it any more".
"The next step after that will be to dismantle the Eiffel Tower and bring it back home where it belongs."
He said if need be he would use military force if the French gave him any trouble.

The dreams of a true republican

2. poppycock
They do NOT see it as a human rights issue.
From the article: "What we want to do is encourage legal immigration and discourage illegal immigration,"

No they do not. If they did, they would be talking about the 'wet foot/dry foot' means of entering this country.

We have many 'illegal' immigrants here in the Keys. But, they are now here legally. Unlike Mexicans, Guatemalans, etc, once a Cuban immigrant sets foot on dry land, they are determined to be 'legal'.

And while I do not have statistics, the many that I personally know (I work in the service industry) who have come here 'illegally', have now, because they are not fearful of deportation, and are able to take advantage of our system, become very hard working, PRODUCTIVE citizens. They are NOT being 'taken advantage of' because they, like every citizen or green card holding resident, have our system on their side (ie-wages and benefits, ability to report crimes, etc).

This is just another way to badger "widows and orphans". (for those unfamiliar, it is from Isaiah 1:17). 4 Million children, known as 'citizens children' are born into illegal immigrant families. Many are having to choose between living in the country they grew up in (the US)or following their families when they are deported.

I can't believe this will ever pass in Florida.

4. Will that include Cubans?
Will that include any Cuban that makes it across the channel? Because right now, we automatically let them in and declare them a hero. They get the welfare and free medical care because of the anti-Castro lobby in South Florida.

Make the law include Cuban refugees, and then we'll talk, assholes.

5. The GOP knows that massive national voter caging like this is their only hope.
In GOP nirvana, only white people will be able to vote. The rest will fear that they'll be "arrested when they show up to vote and don't have the proper papers."

6. Well since this is FL, then this bill would cause the GOP to shoot themselves in the foot.
