Calif. advances bill creating special Reagan day
Source: Associated Press

The state Assembly approved a bill Monday that would honor Ronald Reagan with a special day of recognition, but not before Democrats tried to score a few political points.

Assemblywoman Lori Saldana, D-San Diego, said the late conservative icon should be remembered for once heading a labor union — the Screen Actors Guild — and for approving tax increases as governor. He supported giving illegal immigrants a way to become citizens and signed into law a bill allowing abortions in cases of rape or incest.

"Reagan is acknowledged for being pro-labor, for being pro-choice, for increasing taxes when the situation called for it and for being pro-immigration," Saldana said, pushing four GOP hot buttons.

"He was not perfect," retorted Assemblyman Anthony Adams, R-Hesperia. "We're not trying to deify him. We're just trying to show him the respect and honor that he deserves."

... By a unanimous vote, the Assembly passed the legislation creating Ronald Reagan Day every Feb. 6. Schools would be encouraged to commemorate the accomplishments of the Republican governor and president.

7. Hey, if Nixon gets cred for what he did
we should give Reagan the same cred.

CEQA is one of the toughest environmental acts ever initiated.

Seriously, if Reagan and Nixon had had ANY IDEA about the sheer bureaucracy that was going to be created, they would have run screaming for their California estates.

10. Not just repukes. Dems supported this POS idea too.
With unemployment in this state sky high, infrastructure crumbling, schools underfunded, and on and on, you'd think the lawmakers would have better things to do. Bunch of lazy shit-for-brains idiots up there in Sacramento.

5. At least we have Cesar Chavez and Harvey Milk days too, right?
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 08:50 PM by alp227
So I guess our state is fair and balanced in picking which state figures to recognise in special days.

I can't imagine how schools will sugarcoat Iran/Contra, the Savings & Loan crisis, or the Reagan debt. Or Reagan turning his back on AIDS. Or the Reagan recession of most of his 1st term. Or the many crooks in his cabinet like Oliver North or Jim Wright.

And I'm not surprised to see a unanimous vote right here. It's a tough year for the Democrats because of the budget deficit, recession, and unemployment. Daring to say no to Reagan Day=non-stop fodder for local trash talk radio and Republican mailers.

Oh, and for California, Reagan slashed up public education! So public schools glamorising Reagan is like the NAACP holding an evening gala in celebration of the Republican Party.

31. It wasn't just about casualties
although there were several, with at least one death. It was the way that Governor Reagan stirred things up and showed everyone what a complete asshole he could be. Why anyone even considered this jerk-off for President after that is beyond my comprehension.

16. "Pro-Union"...???
His major "achievements" at SAG were to negotiate contracts heavily slanted toward the studios, and back the McCarthy-era blacklist. He was about as "pro-union" as BP is "pro-environment."

at least Reagan knew how to ride a horse and wasn't scared shitless of them.

I doubt that qualifies him to have a "day" but it's true.

26. Schools should make sure that Feb 6 always falls on a Saturday.
If Feb 6 falls on a Wednesday for example then for that year that Wednesday would be Feb 9 and the coming Saturday would be Feb 6.
