Kellogg Recalls 28 Million Boxes of Cereal
Source: Wall Street Journal

JUNE 25, 2010, 2:52 P.M. ET

Kellogg Co. recalled about 28 million boxes of cereal largely marketed to children on Friday out of concern that unpleasant smells and flavors emanating from the boxes' plastic packaging could be causing nausea and diarrhea.

The Battle Creek, Mich., company said the voluntary recall covers its Kellogg's Apple Jacks, Kellogg's Corn Pops, Kellogg's Froot Loops and Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereals distributed nationwide with better-if-used-before dates ranging from March 26, 2011, to June 22, 2011.

In a release, Kellogg said the potential for serious health problems is low but some consumers are sensitive to the "uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell" coming from plastic bags containing the cereal.

Adaire Putnam, a spokeswoman for Kellogg, said complaints were received from about 20 people, including five who reported nausea and vomiting.

Ms. Putnam said the bags producing the unpleasant smells and flavors in the cereals were first used in cereal boxes in late March. In the next several months, consumers reported stale, metallic and soap-like tastes and scents, she said.

1. Have a half-eaten box of Froot Loops in the pantry, smells like...froot, and not much else.
Maybe they're having a reaction to the froot.

it was OK to be an openly, blatantly sugary cereal, and no one apologized for it. Good times...

the contents were found to have a higher nutritional value than the carton whereas historically they may not have been the case. I guess someone had been wasting their money and they didn't want the public to get used to it.

15. Ah, "free" trade at its best.
I'll bet it's bug spray.

I had a box of cake flour that had that awful chemical smell to it. I refused to touch it. It is still sitting in my pantry and it still smells. Not a single bug though.

Don't you just love "free" trade?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Kellogg Co. is recalling 28 million boxes of several popular cereals due to an unusual flavor and smell, the company said Friday.

The recall includes some boxes of Kellogg (K, Fortune 500) brands Corn Pops, Honey Smacks, Froot Loops and Apple Jacks. The recalled products were sold across the country, Kellogg said.

The company said potential for serious health problems is low, but an "uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell coming from the liner in the package" could cause temporary symptoms including nausea and diarrhea.

22. Sounds like Frank Zappa's breakfast.
"To me, a cigarette is food," said Zappa in his autobiography, The Real Frank Zappa Book. "I live my life smoking these things, and drinking the ‘black water’ in this cup here."

25. Kellogg cereal is all laced with High Fructose Corn Syrup
So we do not eat their poison anyway. The crappy new taste and texture of cereals I had eaten since childhood drove me away ages ago.

28. Agree
Quit eating ANY processed food from the world of manufactured food (primarily sugar, fat, salt) long ago. And I never bought the processed cereals (only 'Old Fashioned' oatmeal) for my children who, now in their twenties, are thankfully not obese.

I have even found that many of the recipes that I try from the conventional chefs on the Food Network have increased the amounts of sugar/processed food in their recipes to the extent that I take today's conventional recipes with scepticism. There is apparently a higher tolerance for sugar, fat and salt in today's food gourmets. Although I have not checked this scientifically, when I have tried recipes from say the Barefoot Contessa, it seems that they are so sweet that I cannot tolerate the high sugar content. This is so sad becaue going the natural food way is healthier and there is more flavor the less tainted the food is.

Good for Kellogs, not that I eat that stuff, at least they tried to do the right thing.

They shit on Michael Phelps for smoking pot, and I have been boycotting them since.

Miss those Pop Tarts, though. Had to go with an off-brand.
