Man arrested on explosives charge ahead of G-20

TORONTO — A Toronto man was charged Wednesday with possession of explosives in what police are calling a G-20 summit-related arrest.

Officers armed with a search warrant went to a million-dollar-plus home in a wealthy neighborhood in Toronto's north end to charge Byron Sonne, 37, with several offenses, including possession of explosives, dangerous weapons, intimidating a justice system participant and mischief, police said in a statement Wednesday.

Sonne made a brief court appearance Wednesday. A thin, white man with a receding hairline, he was clad in a black T-shirt. His case was put over until later in the afternoon.

Police spokesman Jillian Van Acker declined to release more details but police say the investigation is part of the ongoing effort to ensure a safe and secure G-20 Summit in Toronto this weekend.

was planning to monitor police radio then twitter. From Globe and Mail story it seems he bought "innocuous items" to attract police attention.

Mr. Hirsh alleges Mr. Sonne planned to tap into police radio bandwidths during the G20, monitor what was said and publish it via Twitter – replicating what was done by activists during last fall’s G20 summit in Pittsburgh. That attempt resulted in the arrest of several would-be hacktivists and launched an ongoing court case.

Mr. Hirsh said via his Twitter account that: “Byron also indicated he was trying to trigger alerts by buying innocuous items. Seems he successfully got their attention.”

Mr. Sonne’s LinkedIn profile says he specializes in computer and network security. In addition, he is a licenced private investigator and a Certified Information Systems Security Professional.

He used to work as a senior systems specialist at Webkinz, a “vulnerability and exposure research engineer” at nCircle Network Security and a vulnerability research specialist at FSC Internet Corp.
