Salazar: MMS 'is no more'
Source: NECN/Comcast

The Mineral Management Service "is no more," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told a Congressional subcommittee on Wednesday.

The hearing on the reorganization of the MMS involves a new configuration titled the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, which will be headed by Michael Bromwich and Wilma Lewis, both former prosecutors. Their involvement is aimed at "attacking" the corruption issues of the former MMS.

"I am confident that with their leadership and with the support of this committee that we will be able see the day where the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management can have the standards and can have the enforcement to be able to do job that it needs to do," Secretary Salazar said.

7. Funny how quick that Salazar was able to do this NOW but it was "impossible " earlier.
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 04:11 PM by saracat

21. Hmm... I wonder how "impossible" it would have been if RFK, Jr. were Secretary instead!
Though this is less his area, I have a feeling that perhaps at least the Massey mining disaster might have been avoided if he'd done some overhaul earlier on. He certainly has worked a lot on trying to clean up the coal mining industry over the years.

We're paying for having too many corporatists in the cabinet now I think...

25. This sounds like the Whitehouse is finally doing
what should have been done 18 months ago. There's no way Salazar selected a pair of prosecutors to run the agency. He was obviously told who to appoint.

8. Did they fire the MMS staff or did they come over to the new service.
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 04:14 PM by Mr. Sparkle
For whatever reason I am under the impression that there was a lot of bush people still left in the mms. I hope they haven't been brought over.

24. These are gov't workers - you can't fire them on the spot
there must be investigations and procedures followed so they won't claim discrimination, wrongful termination and all that.

9. It would be nice if at least one
of the new heads had some knowledge of the industry. Have an attorney as inspector general to root out the corruption. That's about as bad as having a geologist run an oil company. Oh, wait. . .
