US advances at World Cup with 1-0 win

<snip>

"Landon Donovan scored in the first minute of stoppage time off a rebound, advancing the United States to the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria.

With the U.S. perhaps three minutes from elimination, Jozy Altidore was stopped on a breakaway by goalkeeper Rais Bolihi. Donovan hustled in and kicked in the rebound to win Group C Wednesday."

Donovan goal puts US in 2nd round

<snip>

"Landon Donovan scored a stunning goal in the first minute of injury time off a rebound, advancing the United States to the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria.

With the U.S. perhaps three minutes from elimination Wednesday, Donovan brought the ball upfield on a counterattack and Jozy Altidore's shot on the breakaway was tipped by Clint Dempsey into goalkeeper Rais Bolihi. The rebound went to Donovan, who kicked it in from about 8 yards for one of the biggest goals in U.S. soccer history.

It gave the Americans first place in Group C. With just its fifth shutout in World Cup play, the United States (1-0-2) won a group for the first time since 1930 and will face the runner-up in Group D this weekend."

<snip>

"England (1-0-2), which beat Slovenia moments earlier, also had five points but finished second because the U.S. scored four goals to two for the English. Slovenia (1-1-1) was third with four points, missing advancing because of Donovan's heroics. Algeria (0-2-1) was last with one point."

4. Except you didnt post the score in the title

7. So in a disussion forum of thousands, with hundreds of soccer threads, and news posted in seconds
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 11:26 AM by dmallind
You thought it might be a good idea to simply scan all threads while simultaneously remaining ignorant of the current status of a game for several hours?

8. All threads?
No, I hit 'Latest Threads' and it was there right at the top in front of my eyeballs. Spoilers should NEVER be posted in the title of
a message. To do so is just rude and inconsiderate. Having to avoid visiting DU until one watches the match seems a bit much to ask when a little common sense on the posters part would avoid the situation.

BTW, I'm not so sure that the Democratic Underground is really supposed to be the home of 'hundreds of soccer threads'. If someone was visting ESPN it would be one thing, but DU is another.

10. So "Latest Threads" should not have news?
"spoilers" are relevant only to non-current events such as books and movies, where exposure at different times is assumed. A sports event only happens once, and current updates should be expected.

I agree hundreds of soccer threads are of questionable value (no "air quotes" needed incidentally - feel free to count if you don't believe there are hundreds of them) on DU but then again so are thousands of Michael Jackson and Susan Boyle threads, but they seem to crop up.

If you want to avoid being informed of current events, yes I would suggest avoiding "latest" threads. Looking at individual forums may have been a better way to enjoy DU.

13. There were many requests in the Winter Olympics to avoid spoilers in the titles
because people on the west coast could not see it live. It was almost uniformly observed after it was asked for. For a game going on during the day, when many cannot see it live, it seems reasonable to make a similar request.

23. I didn't
I just looked at the Latest Threads and there it was. It would be a lot better if people were considerate of others.

2. Stoppage time? Is that soccer talk for OT?
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 11:58 AM by rocktivity
Glad they won, but from what I've read, there was no reason why they couldn't have.

After tying two games they probably should have won, CUE THE VONAGE THEME!

5. During the playing time there are momentary stoppages for injuries

The referee keeps track of the stoppage and then adds it to the end of the match.

Usually it is about 4 minutes of extra play.

It means they won by the skin of their teeth - not a good sign.

6. They won by the skin of their teeth, but...
they had SO many chances, including another controversial disallowed goal. It was really amazing it took them that long to score. By all rights, this game should have finished at least 3-0.

25. Algeria played kinda nasty in the second half.
Just trying to run out the clock to force a draw and keep USA from advancing. Well, that's the game though. It was nice to see them celebrate the goal :)

11. I remember when they introduced the fourth official showing added time

It was 30 seconds for a substitution and 1 minute for a goal. When they started in the 90's it was clear.
Now I have the impression they just make it up.

14. I've never heard of "30 seconds for a substitution and 1 minute for a goal"
maybe that was just the American system. Stoppage time also accounts for delays due to injuries; it is not 'made up', but kept track of.

12. Seems like..
they would just make the game 96 minutes, with two 48 minute halves. But I guess if they went with a clock counting down a team with a lead would simply play keep away, and fake injuries to eat up the clock.

21. they have that in american football as well..
except in american football, they actually have someone who knows how to operate a clock, so everyone knows precisely how much time is left in the game.

Great. I guess.

So, we've played what, four weeks, and eliminated, uhhhh, North Korea and Cameroon so far? In another month or two, we'll see a couple more countries fall by the wayside. Yee. Hah.

22. Algeria finished last in the group.
So I guess they weren't that good.

England was favored to win the group, so the US winning is somewhat of an upset.

24. Exciting game!! I almost fell of the treadmill at the gym when they scored.
I was so excited I forgot to keep running. Guy next to me watching too. When "Fox New Guy" showed up, he was overruled when we told him not to change the channel 'cuz we were watching the game. He sulked and went to the weights.

They won the group for the first time in 80 years!!
