White House to appeal ruling against drilling ban
Source: AP

WASHINGTON – The White House said Tuesday it will immediately appeal a federal judge's ruling against the Obama administration's moratorium on new deepwater drilling.

A New Orleans judge on Tuesday blocked the six-month ban imposed in the wake of the Gulf oil spill, saying the Interior Department had failed to provide adequate reasons for it.

Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, defended the moratorium and promised an immediate appeal to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Gibbs said President Barack Obama believes that until investigations can determine why the spill happened, continued deepwater drilling potentially exposes workers and the environment to "a danger that the president does not believe we can afford."

1. Escrow
O.K. but put money in escrow to cover any damages before restarting. I don't trust corporations.

There is no amount of money that can accomodate for extinction of species. And more generally, when our oceans die there's no way to make it right.

5. They must sign over their entire assets plus insure them for 10,000% of the damages they may cause
So if they break the ocean, then they are in the hole and done.

One shot, one fuckup, they're done.

3. You know 10 years ago ...
I would have said that this judge is mental. But, now everything is political. Even the whores, we call judges. The lines are so blurred they have become meaningless.

4. This judge was a Reagan appointee and a heavy investor in oil stocks.

7. Actually, I think it is a simple due process issue. The govenrment
took away a "property" right (the right to continue to conduct deep water drilling operations) from a entity without due process. I am going to read the opinion if I can but I would put money on this being the basis.
