Oil leak sullies river in Peru's Amazon basin region

AFP - A leaking oil tanker spilled at least 400 gallons of oil into the Maranon River in Peru's Amazon basin interior, the company Pluspetrol reported Monday.

"What has leaked is on the order of 400 barrels," said civil defense regional spokesman Robert Falcon told AFP, referring to the accident in the port of San Jose de Saramuro, Loreto province, about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of Lima.

Pluspetrol spokesman Daniel Guerra confirmed the figure. It wasn't known what caused the leak on the ship.

A local Loreto government official, Norman Lewis de Alcazar, said locals were concerned about fish they eat being poisoned.
