Unemployment falls in 37 states in May (mainly because people gave searching for work)
Source: MSNBC/AP

But most of the declines came as people gave up searching for work

WASHINGTON - A majority of states saw their unemployment rates drop in May. But the widespread declines were mainly because people gave up work searches and were no longer counted.

The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate fell in 37 states and the District of Columbia. Six states had increases and seven saw no change.

Forty-one states and the District of Columbia saw a net increase in jobs. But that reflected national data showing a huge gain because of government hiring of temporary census workers.

Nevada rose to the highest jobless rate in the country, marking the first time in more than four years that Michigan did not hold that distinction. Nevada's rate climbed to 14 percent. Michigan's fell to 13.6 percent.

1. I never really accept the idea that people stopped looking for work.
Unless they have some other means of support I think it really means they no longer get unemployment benefits so the fall off the radar screen. Out of sight our of mind.

4. I am an example of what you are saying.
I am out of benefits and according to the powers that be, I am no longer unemployed.

I still check certain web sites daily.

Not encouraging, in fact, it is down-right depressing.

2. Michigan no longer has the highest unemployment
Even though our unemployment is still high, it's nice not to be number 1 for at least one month.

3. no longer counted and told by headhunters they need not apply for jobs
Ain't life grand? :sarcasm:

The Senate tells the unemployed to go **** themselves. Any new stats on suicide rates? It's HORRENDOUS for the unemployed -- but HEY, the economy is improving!!!!!! :sarcasm:

5. thank you!
Thank you for putting your title in proper context i.e. (mainly because people gave up searching for work). It bugs the bejeezus out of me when I see it out of context as most people tend to read headlines only and then start quoting that as the full fact(which is what I'm sure the MSM wants them to think).

6. Interesting that the "left-wing media" never reported similarly
on Dumbyass' watch, when over-qualified unemployed people were accepting Home Despot jobs out of desperation.

11. Things that make your head spin
WASHINGTON - The number of people filing new claims for jobless benefits jumped last week after three straight declines, another sign that the pace of layoffs has not slowed.

Economists have said they don't expect to see sustained job creation until first-time jobless claims drop below 425,000 per week.

The number of people continuing to claim benefits rose by 88,000 to 4.57 million. That doesn't include about 5.2 million people who receive extended benefits paid for by the federal government. All told, about 9.7 million people received unemployment insurance in the week ending May 29, the most recent data available.

13. yeah, I'm one of those and I was just informed that my Tier 2 is all I'm going to get
and I was employed at my last job for eight years....EIGHT FUCKING YEARS and it can be easily verified

and now they are telling me that extensions are being phased out ( whatever the fuck that means ) because I didn't earn enough work credits ( apparently, I was supposed to work a certain amount of weeks to qualify for a new claim but there IS NO FUCKING WORK!!!!! why would I be filing for unemployment if there WAS?!!! ) so they tell me I can only get the rest of my Tier 2 which will run out in July and then I am fucked....

and fuck these senators that voted against this...fuck them and fuck them hard!!! I wish I had their cushy lifestyles, motherfuckers! And they supposedly represent US!!!

FUCKERS!!!!!!!!

14. Maybe one day they will gauge unemployment by income tax
revenue. In my dreams, I suppose. At least you will count all the people who are NO LONGER WORKING and earning, as well as the under-employed. Revenues down by 30% = unemployed up by 30%. How do you count people just because they ran out of unemployment as "not looking" and therefore, "not unemployed" anymore. Huh? Beating my head against the wall here.
