GM To Keep Most Plants Open This Summer
Source: Manufacturing.Net

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Co. says it will keep most of its U.S. factories open through the normal two-week summer shutdown to meet demand for some of its vehicles.

The automaker says it will keep nine of 11 assembly plants open to make 56,000 more vehicles that are in high demand, such as the Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan and the Chevrolet Traverse large crossover vehicle.

GM said in a statement Thursday that the company is trying to reduce waiting time for dealers and customers to get vehicles.

Plants that will stay open from June 28 to July 9 are located in Arlington, Texas; Bowling Green, Kentucky; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Hamtramck, Michigan, Kansas City, Kansas; Flint, Michigan; Delta Township, Michigan; Lansing, Michigan; and Wentzville, Mo.

Good news, I'd say - nine assembly plants full of highly-skilled labor working for two extra weeks. To keep up with consumer demand.

Damn that socialist auto bailout! Fie to that stimulus bill! Maybe Rep. Joe Barton can tell us why this is, in reality, horrible horrible news. :eyes:

2. I thought the same thing - but 17/24 is not bad for an 8-passenger V-6 vehicle.
I'd rather see the jobs filled at this point.

7. GM scraps summer shutdown, will hire thousands of temp workers
Source: Detroit News

Most General Motors Co. plants will keep building vehicles during the traditional summer shutdown next month, an unprecedented move to meet demand for certain vehicles.

Nine of GM's 11 assembly plants -- including four in Michigan -- will keep producing from June 28 through July 9, GM said today.

Most U.S. stamping and powertrain plants also will work during that time, helping GM produce another 56,000 vehicles.

GM has struggled to meet demand for certain vehicles, including the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia, and have added third shifts at several plants this year, among various moves.
