News Alert: General David Petraeus faints at hearing
10:40 AM EDT Tuesday, June 15, 2010
--------------------

Gen. David H. Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, fell ill at the witness table during a Senate hearing Tuesday and had to be escorted from the room.

Petraeus was listening to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) express concern about the direction of the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan when he appeared to faint. Aides immediately rushed to help him, and he was led out of the hearing room.

Sen. Carl M. Levin (D-Mich.) said, he 'appears to be doing very well.'

11. Petraeus escorted from hearing after apparent choking
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 09:59 AM by RamboLiberal
Source: CNN

The commander of U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan was escorted from a congressional hearing room after apparently choking during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Tuesday.

Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of CENTCOM, appears to be doing “very much better."

He is eating and “probably didn’t have enough to drink before coming in here this morning.”

"We will make a decision hopefully in a few minutes as to whether we're going to proceed this morning or not," Levin said

Gen. David Petraeus appeared to have passed out during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Tuesday, recovering enough to be escorted from the room.

The head of Central Command was in the midst of a dialogue with Arizona Sen. John McCain when he slumped over the witness table. Several officials gathered around Petraeus, who was able to stand up and walk out on his own.

The committee recessed its hearing for several minutes as lawmakers and aides determined whether Petraeus was well enough to continue. Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., suggested that Petraeus was dehydrated but had recovered quickly.

"General Petraeus appears to be doing very well," he said.

It's my favorite rant as anyone who's read my posts knows, since Gulf War illness has struck so close to home for me. 300 tons of it dropped in the first Gulf War and 3000 in the second and all so that me, my children and now miscarriages and birth defects for my grandchildren can pay the price. Go ahead and pass out, Betrayus. It won't break my heart if you keep doing it for the forseeable future.

23. So apparently he collapsed (OP), fainted (#9), and choked (#11)
while not having enough to drink (also #11). Must've been something to see.

Good thing he didn't cough, burp, fart, sneeze, and hiccup all at the same time. I have it on good authority you explode if that happens.

Our troops, at this point, should be dropping off to sleep, exhausted not only by McCain's obstinacy but by combat fatigue. On the other hand, in Petraeus's case I wouldn't rule out narcolepsy.

U.S. Central Commander Gen. David Petraeus rises out of his chair after appearing to collapse on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, June 15, 2010, while appearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

WASHINGTON— Gen. David Petraeus slumped at the witness table Tuesday while testifying at a Senate hearing, and a spokesman said the general was likely dehydrated and jet-lagged from his travels.

Petraeus, 57, revived after a few seconds and left the room under his own power. After about 20 minutes he returned to the hearing room, but Sen. Carl Levin, the panel chairman, decided to postpone the hearing.

"It appears he was maybe a little jet-lagged, dehydrated certainly," said Petraeus' spokesman, Col. Erik Gunhus.

President Barack Obama later called Petraeus from Air Force One as he returned from a two-day trip to the Gulf Coast.

"Sounds like he's doing good, he sounded great," White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters traveling with the president. "Sounds like he was just a little dehydrated."

Petraeus had finished telling Sen. John McCain that he believed the planned 2011 drawdown of U.S. troops in Afghanistan remains on track, and McCain was responding when the room fell silent and aides began crowding around the four-star general
