Census: Minorities grow to 35% of U.S. population
Source: Associated Press

The nation’s minority population is steadily rising and now makes up 35 percent of the United States, advancing an unmistakable trend that could render them the new American majority by midcentury.

New Census estimates show minorities added more than 2 percent in 2009 to 107.2 million people, boosted by a surge in Hispanic births and more people who described themselves as multiracial. During this time, the white population remained flat, making up roughly 199.9 million, or 65 percent, of the country.

In 2000, whites comprised 69 percent of the total population and minorities 31 percent.

Currently four states — Hawaii, New Mexico, California and Texas — as well as the District of Columbia have minority populations that exceeded 50 percent. About 311 of the 3,143 counties — one in 10 — have minority populations of 50 percent or greater. That’s up from more than 250 counties in 2000.

1. This is the bright spot in an otherwise bleak picture for me lately. Perhaps the
whole white privilege thing and the people who are still invested in it will be buried and dead soon. One can dream, anyway.

7. One wonders what our nations laws will look like in such a situation...
the basic presumption of most EEOC laws is that "the norm" is white male. When the they are no longer a majority, can current EEOC laws withstand challenges by now, "minority" white males to similar protected status, and provided the same priviledge, quota, and set-aside programs be provided FOR THEM?

4. To be fair
Don't people still assume if someone is 1/2 or 1/4 non-white that that makes them non-white? Obama is half white, half black but he is considered black. If he married a white woman and had kids those kids would be considered black too (although they'd have Ice-T's skin tone).

So the non-white population is growing, but when you consider that any person with any non-white skin tones will be considered a minority it is pretty much expected that non-whites will be the majority by 2040 or so.

All white people can do is break even, we can't convert anyone to whiteness. White people can have black/hispanic/asian/etc kids if we marry a non-white person, but non-whites children aren't going to be considered white (unless they are really really light skinned).

6. Interesting how the first sentence assumes "minority" is itself a monolith. (nt)

8. The problem is too many people, including too many babies
What group they belong to is irrelevant.

I'd cheer if our growth rate dropped to below replacement level. The ethnic/racial makeup of the growth rate means nothing to me.
