Surprise SC Senate candidate has charge pending
Source: Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's surprise Democratic nominee to challenge U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint is facing a pending felony charge.

Court records show 32-year-old Alvin Greene was arrested in November and charged with showing obscene Internet photos to a University of South Carolina student. The felony charge carries up to five years in prison.

Greene said he had no comment when asked about the charge Wednesday and hung up on a reporter.

The unemployed veteran posted bond after his arrest. He has yet to enter a plea or be indicted.

5. It didn't come out until he won the primary. Perhaps even he didn't think that would happen

8. In all seriousness, there is a question for DSCC and the State Party to answer...

Specifically, "were you paying attention?"

From what I can tell, there was a perfectly inoffensive candidate (Victor Rawl) who had modest fundraising success and at least one newspaper endorsement. Who wasn't watching when Greene came out of nowhere to win last night?

I personally do not have a lot of warm, fuzzy feelings for the job Bob Menendez and J.B. Poersch are doing at DSCC, notably being blindsided by the lackluster Martha Coakley campaign and having to scramble at the last minute to trepair the damage (using money out of my pocket that could have gone elsewhere). I didn't for a minute expect DeMint to lose, but forcing the Republicans to play some defense would have helped tie up resources they can now use elsewhere.

South Carolina Democrats Try to Push Nominee Out
The South Carolina Democratic Party is now trying to push Alvin Greene (D) -- their newly-minted Senate candidate who basically didn't campaign -- out of the race after it was revealed that he was "recently charged with disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity after showing obscene photos to a University of South Carolina student."

A statement: "We are proud to have nominated a Democratic ticket this year that, with the apparent exception of Mr. Greene, reflects South Carolina's values. Our candidates want to give this state a new beginning without the drama and irresponsibility of the past 8 years, and the charges against Mr. Greene indicate that he cannot contribute to that new beginning. I hope he will see the wisdom of leaving the race."

17. I guess there's not any hope, and wasn't any hope of
taking our esteemed Senator Jim away from the Senate.

Geeze, I thought we were trying to keep a Demo controlled Senate.

21. Hmm, the student might have been 17 at the time. Or the student complained.
So this is non-penetrating rape? What's that law?

Meanwhile, George W. Bush still has pending war crime charges that are MUCH worse than scarring a college student for life over some obscene photos.
