'Titanic' director Cameron joins effort to plug Gulf spill
Source: afp

AFP - Filmmaker James Cameron and another Canadian who built submersibles for the director's 1989 thriller "The Abyss" joined talks on Tuesday in Washington on innovative ways of capping the Gulf oil spill.

Cameron and Phil Nuytten, head of North Vancouver-based Nuytco Research, were to join several deepwater and oil sector experts meeting with Environmental Protection Agency officials, a spokeswoman for Nuytco told AFP.

No details of their talks were immediately available.
...
Nuytten is a diving pioneer who conceived of a rotary joint technology used in his company's renowned Newtsuit and other diving suits used in underwater exploration and rescues.

7. James Cameron Working On Gulf Oil Spill Cleanup
Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON — "Top kill" didn't stop the Gulf oil spill. How about something "titanic"?

Federal officials are hoping film director James Cameron can help them come up with ideas on how to stop the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The "Avatar" and "Titanic" director was among a group of scientists and other experts who met Tuesday with officials from the Environmental Protection Agency and other federal agencies for a brainstorming session on stopping the massive oil leak.

The Canadian-born Cameron is considered an expert on underwater filming and remote vehicle technologies. "Avatar" and "Titanic" are the two highest-grossing films of all time.

16. He and his brother helped develop the ROV technology for operating at great depths.
They did so in order to explore the Titanic wreckage which is two and a half miles below the surface.

It's not unreasonable to expect that he may have some useful knowledge to contribute.

22. Right . . . and does that have any parallel to "vacuuming up the oil" which
evidently has been used elsewhere . . . ???

PLUS -- there was also the non-toxic substance which supposedly COAGULATES THE OIL --

and it is recoverable after the oil is retrieved -- and reusable!!

12. If he finds the solution, it's the end of Republicans able to run against 'Hollywood elites.'
I'm pulling for him. Now, get Nick Pozzi to manage the cleanup and my day is complete.

15. Headline suggests wrongly that Cameron IS participating actively
but the actual story stays he's actually being CONSIDERED to help. W.T.F?

C'mon. Cameron's ideas would work on the set but not in the sea.

17. I think anybody with any GOOD ideas
should be asked to help. So what difference does it make if he is a movie director. He might have a brilliant mind for engineering.

19. Interesting ... Cameron has access
to a vast skill pool. Yeah, he knows quite a bit about deep sea work ... but more importantly he knows a lot of people who REALLY know this stuff. Getting Cameron on board brings in probably seven dozen other highly creative and skilled minds.

Still ... it is clear to me that in this case the reach of our technology exceeds our grasp. I don't think anyone ... even Cameron ... is going to emerge with a deus ex machine to save our shores and deeps. But then, I am feeling pessimistic these days.

21. About time that they are reaching out beyond what BP thinks it knows ....
whole oil industry should be involved -- and whole world -- !!!

Why the oil wasn't "vacuumed up" to begin with is another question that lingers!!

Too expensive for BP!!???
