BP has no comment on halting U.S. Gulf oil flow

OIL-RIG/BP (URGENT)HOUSTON, May 27 (Reuters) - BP Plc declined to confirm comments reported on Thursday from the U.S. Coast Guard that the oil company had blocked the flow of oil from its leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico, even though the comments echo what BP said on Wednesday.

A BP spokesman said in an email statement that "operations continue."

The Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday that U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said enough drilling fluid had been pumped into the well to block all oil and gas flowing out.

1. Not enough time
Not enough time... no way that the mud reached 7000-9000 ft down that pipe... another 18-24 hrs

3. I'm hopiing they are just being really cautious before making any announcements
Also I don't think they really know yet if it's been a success.

9. Seen this ?
'Top kill' method 'stops BP oil leak' in Gulf of Mexico.

BP has stopped the flow of oil and gas from a ruptured well into the Gulf of Mexico, a US official told local media.

The company's "top kill" effort has "stabilised the wellhead", Coast Guard commander Thad Allen said, adding that it was too early to declare success.

11. I did see it but there is also this: Coast Guard: "Top kill" effort working "so far"
Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen tells WWL Radio in New Orleans that the risky oil-plug procedure known as "top kill" appears to be working "so far."

Admiral Allen says at this time it appears that no oil is leaking into the Gulf. They are currently pumping mud into the well and crews are waiting for pressures in the well to stabilize before attempting to cement the well shut from the top.

Allen says they are "cautiously optimistic" but are not ready yet to declare victory.

"at this time it appears that no oil is leaking into the Gulf"

Better than nothing I suppose.

4. agreed!
On this issue, we all have our interests in alignment.

Praying that the Admiral is correct, and BP doesn't want to be premature in speaking.

5. Thanks for the follow up. I saw Adm. Allen's comments this AM in LA Times.
I can understand BP wanting to be cautious on any definitive statement.

To be fair to the Adm. he did seem to temper his statement, noting that the cement plug remained to be accomplished.

6. NOW they decide to become cautious?
Better late than never, sure, but the time to exercise caution was before the rig blew up.

15. It's a 'so far, so good' situation.
There's still much to be done, and there's much that could still go wrong.

I'm glad it's looking good to this point.

18. Hmm--is BP being silent because
They know it's a lie?

They know it's true, but they also know the plug will not hold?

They don't know WHAT to say because they had nothing to do with it?
