San Francisco ChroniclePresident Obama, speaking at a Fremont solar energy plant today, said he was "not prepared to cede America's leadership" in green technology or the global economy and called the devastating Gulf of Mexico oil spill a stark reminder of the need for America to develop alternative fuel sources and energy technologies that create new jobs.
"The spill in the gulf, which is heartbreaking, only underscores the necessity of seeking alternative fuel sources," said the President, addressing a crowd of about 250 people - including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger - at Solyndra Inc., a solar panel manufacturer.
"We will not rest until this well is shut, the environment is repaired and this job is complete," Obama said. "But even as we are dealing with this immediate crisis, we have to remember" that the risks of deep water drilling are "not the only costs of our dependence" on fossil fuels, he said.
Obama made the comments as he stood under open rafters and construction equipment in the unfinished interior of Solyndra's new plant, where he touted the work of the company as an example of his administration's efforts to encourage job growth in innovative technologies.

I expect Darrell Issa to demand investigation soon over how President Obama is shamelessly using the gulf oil spill to promote clean energy sources like solar power. Perhaps Tea Partiers will throw a rally and dump gallons of crude off of the Santa Monica pier in protest at such efforts to push alternative energy.
