Big Apple’s big game: N.Y. lands ’14 Super Bowl

IRVING, Texas - Check the antifreeze, grab the mittens, make sure the airport’s not snowed in.

We’re going to the Super Bowl.

NFL owners voted Tuesday to put the 48th Super Bowl in the new $1.6 billion Meadowlands Stadium that this season will become home to the New York Jets and Giants. It’s the first time the league has gone to a cold weather site that doesn’t have a dome and, until now, those places couldn’t even bid on the big game.

The league made an exception for the New York area, and New York only. But just a few years ago, the NHL experimented with an outdoor game on New Year’s Day, and it was such a success that teams now fight to host what’s become an annual event.

Well, the tolls will be horrific just trying to get to the game.

Outside in Feb in NY?? First week of February this year, NY got three feet of snow.

24. You know, the whole reason for playing in the south was to avoid those types
of situations where the championships were played in horrible weather conditions.

Why do you think just about all college bowl games are played in the south? It is a reward for both the fans and the teams. I'm sorry, but New York or any northern team is NO reward for ANY Team. It is a disgrace and an insult to the teams that have worked all year to get to the big game.

26. I think it's great...
and they need to do this more often. Who cares about the fans at the Super Bowl? If they're die hard enough, they won't mind some cold. And they're pretty committed anyways, and usually rich, to get those kind of tickets, so I'm not worried about them. For the millions who are watching at home, which is all the NFL really cares about, it'll be awesome. I think it adds variety to the game. And a game with horrible conditions can be just as if not more interesting than one without.

39. I don't watch college sports but I think that sucks too
If football was meant to be played in warm sunny weather then they should have the season start in April so the Super Bowl comes around late summer/early fall.

I've sat thru enough football games in my lifetime in the fridgid cold and honestly - no bother to me. I think this will be a great game and personally if I could afford tickets I would definately go to the game.

And seriously, you think it's fair that time and time again where cities in the south have a greater chance of a 'home' game since teams like Dallas, New Orleans, Arizona, Miami routinely get rewarded Super Bowl games. Why should only southern cities and cities with domes benefit from the revenue that a Super Bowl brings to the home town? I hope that 2014 works out like a charm and that future cold city games are rewarded games. I hope Philadelphia applies - the Linc is a beautiful stadium worthy of a Super Bowl.

So it won't be too bad if it's an "average" day. But if there's weather, it will likely be snow. :D Most super bowls I remember have been sunny and cold.

7. GREAT NEWS!
Edited on Tue May-25-10 04:17 PM by rocktivity
Not because I'm a local, but because I've always thought it was ridiculous that the one game the NFL won't risk playing in bad weather is the one that's supposed to be about the game at its best.

What about all the regular season games when fans fill the stadiums throughout rain, snow, sleet and gloom of night? I remember one playoff game that was played during an ice storm--the Philadelphia Eagles, I think. On closeups of the ball, you could see a thick icy glaze. It rained the entire time, and I swear I got the sniffles just watching it on TV. But the players gave it their all and there wasn't an empty seat in the house.

I don't begrudge the NFL wanting to make a buck, but prestige has to trump profit SOME of the time. Cue the Vonage theme!

halftime show.

All it would take is 10 degree temperatures, -5 with wind chill, 15 mph winds in a blizzard, and people in the stands risking frostbite and hypothermia and people would rethink it.

Anyone remember the Colts @ Buffalo game from Week 17 last season?

20. Yeah, play it the following week. Because I'm sure all the people who scheduled that day in their
planners are easily going to make it the following Sunday.

All the advertisers, all the people who travelled thousands of miles and bought tickets will easily pay to fly and stay in hotels all over again.

The band for the halftime show certainly won't be doing anything the following Sunday.

All the other performers, the person who sings the national anthem, will have no problem showing up again.

19. you underestimate
football fans... greatly. if both teams that make it to the big game are cold weather teams, like the packers and the jets, it'd be like they'd be back home. all the warm weather teams can cry like little babies, they know what an advantage the weather is.

conversely, cold weather teams playing in hot and humid conditions would complain too, just on the level of a warm weather team pissing and moaning about playing in the cold.

29. No one cares....
The Super Bowl will be sold out, but as it is, ticket sales are the least of the NFL's worries. It's all about the TV audience. You must not know the NFL very well to not think that it won't be sold out. As it is, only the relatively rich and wealthy can go anyways, so they don't mind "wasting" their money.

during the winter. Yeah, it snows. But below freezing temps here in CT are not that usual. 30 degrees with some snow is typical Jan. weather. It is not 65 to 70 degrees and sunny but real football fans can handle it.

44. I hear ya
The year the Giants last won the superbowl (2008), they had to play a playoff game in Green Bay - it was said it was the second coldest game ever and I loved every second of it. In fact, I usually root for Green Bay (when they aren't playing my beloved Giants) because ya gotta love those fans who show up in monstrous weather year after year. My hope is that the Giants play in that 2014 playoff and play against a pansy assed team that ususally plays in warm weather or under a dome.

17. Probably a done deal long ago
I suspect that this was a done deal when the Giants and Jets agreed to build this thing.
The game should be played at a site that takes the weather out of the equation. What if the San Diego Chargers, Tampa, or Miami teams make it in? They would be a significant disadvantage in a NJ/NY February. Even NY'ers leave the NE in February - it's a brutal time of year: grey, dark, cold, and often wet.
The teams probably wouldn't care though, it's the thousands of other people who go to these games and are not your traditional football fans. They go for the week or so in New Orleans, Miami, or some other warm area. It will be interesting to see what happens with that. And what about the entertainment? Who will play in sub-freezing temps?
Ironically, the NFL is punishing Miami beacuse they have a 23 year-old stadium and it rained once. So no Super Bowl for you Miami - even though it's hands down the best venue and probably a top fave with the crowd.
Bad idea, but get used to it - power is power and the Giants & Jets owners do wield some power in the NFL.
I lived in NY for 35 years. No way would I go back for anything in February.

a new stadium.

It's the NFL's way of rewarding cities and taxpayers for footing the majority of the bill on building a new stadium.

Notice how most of the Super Bowls this past decade have been hosted in newly built stadiums that were constructed within 4 or 5 years of the host date?

Want your city to host a Super Bowl? Spend $1 billion or more on a new stadium.

37. Games past January 1 should be held somewhere warm
A snowy game is entertaining, but having the playoffs in the coldest month of the year is just plain stupid. When the NFL added the "bye" weeks, they stretched the playoffs into mid-January. The winds off Lake Erie in January are positively brutal. I don't even want to go to the December games, and nor do a lot of Cleveland fans.
