2. Here is more:
(CNN) -- A plane crash in western India early Saturday has killed more than 160 passengers, an Indian official said.

V.S. Acharya, the home minister of India's Karnataka state, told CNN-IBN he thought about five or or six people had survived the crash.

The Air India plane was carrying 165 passengers and went down around 6:30 a.m. (9 p.m. ET Friday) near the Mangalore airport, CNN-IBN reported, citing an airline spokesman.

The plane burst into flames after overshooting the runway on a flight from Dubai, CNN-IBN reported.

The network said that smoke from the plane and the rugged surrounding terrain were hampering rescue efforts, though about 25 to 30 ambulances were on the scene.http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/05/21/india.plane.crash/?hpt=T1

Very sad news.

10. No apparent problems before the landing
The pilot did not report any problems before landing the plane, the civil aviation ministry said.

The Mangalore airport reported calm wind, no rain and a visibility of 6 km at the time of the crash, the ministry said.

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/05/21/india.plane.crash/?hpt=T1

The Russian pilot of the doomed Air India Boeing jet tried to abort landing when the plane overshot runway and crashed Saturday in Mangalore in southern India, said Anup Srivastava, Director of Air India.

http://world.globaltimes.cn/asia-pacific/2010-05/534406.html

Though it had been raining for two days, there was six-kilometre visibility with no wind when the Boeing 737, carrying 160 passengers including 19 children and four infants as well as six crew members attempted to land at 6.05 a.m., the civil aviation ministry said.

There was no distress call from the pilot, a British national of Serbian origin who had received due landing clearance about four miles from touchdown at the hilltop airport at Bajpe, about 20 km from here and 350 km from Karnataka's capital Bangalore.

The aircraft, the ministry said, touched down the 2.45 km Runway 24 'slightly beyond the touch down zone, overshot the runway and went in the valley beyond the runway'.

The Bajpe airport is considered one of the most difficult airports to land and take off from.

Piecing together eyewitness accounts, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sadananda Gowda said the plane hit an instrument landing system and spun out of control before smashing into a ravine, breaking up and bursting into flames.

13. Plane crashes in India, 159 feared dead, 7 alive
NEW DELHI — An Air India Express plane trying to land in the rain at a tricky hilltop airport in southern India overshot the runway, crashed and burst into flames at dawn Saturday, killing nearly 160 people, officials said. There were seven survivors.

Dense black smoke billowed from the wreckage of the flaming Boeing 737-800 aircraft in a hilly area with thick grass and trees just outside Mangalore's Bajpe airport.

Firefighters sprayed water and foam on the plane — which was traveling from Dubai — as others struggled to find survivors. An Associated Press photo showed two rescuers running up a hill carrying a young girl covered in foam to waiting medics. The child's fate was not immediately known.

The plane was carrying 160 passengers — all Indian — and six crew members, Air India official Anup Srivastava said. The British pilot and Indian co-pilot were killed.
