Chicago Mayor Regrets "Up Your Butt" Comment
Source: CBS News

(CBS 2 Chicago) Mayor Richard M. Daley said Friday that he regrets his choice of words when he suggested he'd stick a rifle with a bayonet up a reporter's "butt," but he said he was trying to "shock" the media into exposing gun manufacturers who flood the streets with firearms.

Richie has had 24/7 Chicago police protection since 1942 when he was a baby on Lowe Avenue. Easy for him to talk.

He is a bullying thug who couldn't stand up to any real man. Maybe we should get rid of all the boat slips along the lake front. Most of them belong to fat cats. But they are Daley's buddies.

12. A remarkable display of doublespeak
Asked if he was sorry for how he went about illustrating his point, Daley said, "Sure I'll be sorry... I'm not going to sing the song 'I'm Sorry' now, but sure, you can write it. But I hope I shocked you that you can write about now the gun manufacturers."

What does that mean, except that he's not actually apologizing, but wants people to react as if he has? (Whereupon he quickly attempted to divert the attention.)

14. The guy
is either stupid, which I don't believe, or slipping little. I have seen this in the geriatric environment which I work...confusion during excited conversation resulting in either inappropriate wording or combinations of words which don't make sense. How old is Daley anyway?

he tries not to do it. he hates it. he knows how to walk back the occasional stupid comment. he has had a lot of practice. that is exactly what he is doing.

i think you are as wrong as you can be about him, but what can i say.

25. If he's had "a lot of practice" at walking back stupid comments...
Edited on Sat May-22-10 09:18 PM by Euromutt
...that logically implies that such comments are a bit more frequent than "occasional."

Frankly, it's less the stupid comment that bothers me as the unwillingness to own up to it. I don't buy into the John Wayne-ian "never explain and never apologize; it's a sign of weakness" saw. To my mind, the inability to admit to one's errors and willingly apologize for them is a sign of rampant insecurity.

Certainly, when you make a habit of uttering stupid remarks, there comes a point where it's incumbent upon yourself to do something about it, instead of pretending everybody else is being unreasonable.

thousands of mile from chicago telling me that my DEMOCRATIC mayor is a crook and an idiot.
this is supposed to be a site for dems, and supportive of dems. you might try giving some small amount of credence to other members who are on the scene.

your comments are completely off base. like dems are supposed to do, he speaks the truth, sometimes even in front of microphones. he also likes to make a little fun of the press. he politely walks back things that people get up in arms about, but has the sense of self to not grovel about it. he does the necessary, and leaves it at that. that's what i do. that's what most of the good dems i know do.
spine. the man has a spine.

29. Doesn't this actually
go beyond a simple stupid comment? First it doesn't even make sense, second it could certainly be considered a threat.I believe the reason he is so set on making sure the people of IL do not have the freedom to choose to protect themselves is because he knows he couldn't be trusted to behave responsibly.

During the news conference, Daley reacted with the help of a prop when a reporter suggested the city's handgun ban has been ineffective, given the number of shootings that still occur in Chicago.

"It's been very effective," Daley said, picking up a gun from the dozens displayed on a nearby table. "If I put this up your butt, you'll find out how effective it is. Let me put a round up your, you know."

34. i'm sorry, but you are really reaching.
he wasn't making a threat. he was making a joke. his walk back was based on knowing that most of the people making a thing out of it knew it was a joke, too.

gun in kansas and guns in a city like chicago are 2 very, very different things, and honestly, a debate that i have no desire to have.

40. What about down state IL?
Edited on Sun May-23-10 03:17 PM by pipoman
Should Chicago policies dictate to the rest of the state?

Is there a film of this exchange? Was he smiling or laughing when he answered a very pertinent question regarding the effectiveness of his policies? Or did the question actually make him mad which resulted in an outburst?

Oh, wait...here it is..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHSMMcJEQqU

Yeah, not so much, I am not reading this as a joke, more a temper tantrum...maybe just me...

As for people outside of Chicago being critical of your mayor...I wouldn't bother if your mayor wasn't trying to influence national politics with his completely ineffective brand of gun control.

26. Also consistent with a bully who's been brought to heel
So how do you tell when Daley means what he says?

FWIW, incidentally, I thought the "up your butt" comment wasn't a threat. Rather, Daley was trying to convey the point that being shot would be a new experience for the journalist because Chicago's gun laws had prevented that from happening up to that point. Which is a blatant post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy, but not a threat.
