Colbert, Ga., won't invite Stephen Colbert
Source: Augusta Chronicle

COLBERT, Ga. -- After some consideration, the city of Colbert will not invite Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central's Colbert Report, to its Fourth of July parade.

Preston Coleman, a communications professor at Gainesville State College's Watkinsville campus, presented the Colbert City Council a petition, signed by 499 people, to change the pronunciation of the city from "cull-bert" or "call-bert" to "cole-bear" - as Stephen Colbert pronounces his name.

"His satire is probably something that we didn't feel suited our small-town atmosphere," said Colbert Mayor Chris Peck.

Colbert has hosted Hee Haw star Archie Campbell and fertilizer salesman-turned-comedian Jerry Clower for previous 4th of July events.

1. i.e. He makes fun of nutcases like us, so we can't have him here.
Also from the article:

"We're not above taking a good joke," Peck said. "I just don't think the Fourth of July was the appropriate venue for that."

So, no joke telling on the 4th of July, good people of Colbert, GA. Apparently, that day is reserved for all seriousness... or just bad joke telling.

5. Yeah, it's a really-cheap way for a little town to get some national attention.

4. If only his name were Georgia and not Stephen.
;-)

Still, his satire is likely exactly what is NEEDED in their small-town atmosphere.

11. So, how long will it take for some of the small business owners in town to figure out what they just
turned down?

Perhaps I should plunk down some cash, buy a copy of "Twilight in Forks" and send it to the Chamber of Commerce in Colbert, GA. Forks, WA has 60,000 people a year visiting (and spending money in local businesses,) because of the "Twilight" craze, which continues almost four years after the first book was published.

If I owned a business in that town, I'd be asking some tough questions at the next meeting.
