U.S. Will Retain Power in Sovereign Iraq
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040321/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_american_power&cid=540&ncid=1473

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The United States says Iraq (news - web sites) will be sovereign, no longer under military occupation, on June 30. But most power will reside within the world's largest U.S. Embassy, backed by 110,000 U.S. troops.

The fledgling Iraqi government will be capable of tackling little more than drawing up a budget and preparing for elections, top U.S. and Iraqi officials say.

"We're still here. We'll be paying a lot of attention and we'll have a lot of influence," a top U.S. official said on condition of anonymity. "We're going to have the world's largest diplomatic mission with a significant amount of political weight."

In just over three months, the mantle of sovereignty in Iraq will be passed to an interim government. Its composition and the manner of its choosing will be decided after a United Nations (news - web sites) team arrives this week.

2. Obviously not. But bush and his buddies don't use words like most
people do. They have a strange language. Their actions are the EXACT opposite of what they say they are doing and are going to do. It's like living in Bizarro World.

3. An Iraqi version of Cuba's infamous Platt Amendment
The Platt Amendment was forced on Cuba as a condition of independence in 1902. It gave the US veto power over Cuba's sovereignty together with the right to send the Marines to protect American business interests.

The sooner we get out of Iraq, unconditionally, the better off we will be.

Edited on Sun Mar-21-04 04:18 PM by Old and In the Way
Now why would we want to control Iraq's country? Couldn't be the #2 oil reserves, could it? Or the entire region's reserves, for that matter.

14. No, the problem is that
the United States cannot disengage from Iraq without creating chaos. We've been suckered into a lose-lose situation. Iraq may become like a 51st state, not because of imperialist designs or anything of that sort, but simply by default - because every other scenario is even worse. The Bush Administration really screwed up.

15. Won't happen anytime soon...
...really...the misAdministration can't turn the country over to the Iraqis unless we can guarantee that it is free of WMD. Now...you know there are no weapons, and I know there are no weapons, but the Bushies will never admit it. Therefore, we have to stay.

18. The thirteen colonies had more sovereignty in 1770
Vichy France had more sovereignty in 1942.
Poland had more sovereignty in 1970.
Gaul had more sovereignty in 50 A.D.
etc.

This will fool nobody, least of all the Iraqis themselves.

19. The United States says Iraq will be sovereign

The United States says Iraq will be sovereign . . . . But most power will reside within the world's largest U.S. Embassy, backed by 110,000 U.S. troops.

That is a use of language that would interest Orwell. Some nations are sovereign, but some are more sovereign than others.
