Powell: Saddam is Piece of Trash to be Collected
By Arshad Mohammed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) on Wednesday called former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) "a piece of trash waiting to be collected" but declined to say how long it may take U.S. forces to find him.

Powell also told Reuters in an interview he currently sees no reason for the United States to give up the authority it and Britain have as "occupying powers" in Iraq (news - web sites) despite demands by some nations, notably France, that the United Nations (news - web sites) play a central role.

snip....

"Saddam Hussein is no longer bad news. He's a piece of trash waiting to be collected," Powell told Reuters.

"Bodyguards are being picked up, close confidants are being picked up ... the noose is tightening but I can't speculate on how close one might be to actually capturing Saddam Hussein," he added.

5. Me: Powell is a Totalitarian Bootlicker and Betrayer of America
However, he has certainly served his Bushevik Masters well and Ihave no doubt that both he and his son the Prince of FCC have been and will continue to be handsomely rewarded.

30 pieces of silver, I believe.

I will never forgive Colon Foul for his treachery to the Old American Republic who's Oath he BROKE.

He is not protecting and defending the Constitution. He is lending his name and shattered credibility to those who are destrying it.

Fuck you, Colon. And you son Fauntleroy the Prince of FCC.

I tell you, these treasonous, aristocratic fucks are almost enought o drive a man to Communism.

NOTE to the Comrades: I said ALMOST!

20. And they have not found any WMD
That was the reason for going over there. Well that was the original reason, regieme change and weapons programs and the Muslim religion came along later. As much as he waved U.N. resolution 1441 around at the beginnig of the year I am still feeling the breeze from that fanning. Let me ask you Colin, is 1441 still applicable? How come you are not still waving it around? Where is the nuclear program, that is right that was a lie! Where is the Al Quida link to Iraq, oh I forgot, that was a lie also.

Mr Powell when are you going to start holding up your end of the deal?

In an awkwardly crafted resolution in May, authored by Washington and London, the Security Council designated the two victorious nations as the "occupying powers". This title carries all the responsibilities, constraints and liabilities that arise under occupation law, codified in the fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 and other instruments. The UN assumed an advisory role but left the legal responsibility squarely with the US and Britain and reminded other nations of their obligations if they deployed troops in Iraq.Occupation law was never intended to encourage invasion and occupation for the purpose of transforming a society, however noble that aim. The narrow purpose is to constrain an occupying military power and thus discourage aggression and permanent occupation. The humanitarian needs of the civilian population take priority and usually require the occupying power to act decisively for that purpose.

That right there is his job, not hunting for Hussein. He needs to stop with the whirl wind tour of propaganda and actually do his job.

23. good point
You're absolutely right. Just a few days after 9/11 Wolfowitz said let's invade Iraq because it would be "easy" They didn't care who was responsible for the 3000+ deaths of 9/11...Blair actually convinced them that Afghanistan was more of a pressing problem. Pretty sad huh? Restraint by BlIAR of all people! It was apparent that Afghanistan was merely a side show. Notice how the place is in shambles still? Oh yea, and with that we're supposed to be confident that we can create a stable middle eastern democracy out of Iraq...and they said that liberals were dreamers!

12. what's your beef?
I'm not sure what you all are angry about. Are you saying Saddam isn't a piece of trash? Is he a lackey to the President because he is responding to a question in an interview about when Saddam will be captured in that way? Despite what you think about the President and disregard your other feelings about Powell, can you not agree that comparing Saddam to trash is a good description?

14. Not *angry*...
appalled. Powell's supposed to a statesman and his choice of words are unacceptable considering his position as S of S. In fact, I believe that utterance is a true barometer for the jack-boots who are running this country. To a man, those that surround * are unethical, unschooled in the arts of diplomacy -and uncaring about the debris they are leaving in their wake. That 'debris' includes this country and what it really was meant to be. I won't even go into the growing instability these greedy, clumsy over-reachers have created in the ME with their tin-horn talk and their swaggering lies... I doubt the killing will end in my lifetime - and I'm not so sure about yours.

18. It's childish and it's born out of propaganda that has blown Saddam's
badness FAR out of proportion to the reality that is described by more rational groups. Colon Powell is a traitor to our country and people are reacting to the arrogance of one piece of trash calling someone else trash.

39. Gangster, trash talk which does nothing to promote civility.....
It's easy to see Powell is in the gutter with the whole bunch. He fooled folks for a long time...but he's been "outed."

He's feeling the heat and his" little chip off the block" has his own FCC woes and so he's fighting like the thug he is.

24. Prime example of
the dumbing down of 'Merica. Why did't he just say something like "Dude, Saddam's a fag." I would have expected something more from Powell, but considering who he associates with now, perhaps not.

38. another bush* stupidity: appoint a MILITARY GENERAL to be
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 06:20 PM by amen1234
Secretary of State (very bad move, and perhaps a first...the SOS is usually chosen to add balance to the military)....

BTW...in his testimony before conference, wolfowitz called saddam's sons something like "despicable creatures"....

this is very important in the military: to portray the enemy as less than human beings...call them: trash, creatures, etc...

that de-humanization is important to fuel the feeling that KILLING is OK, and in this case, KILLING without a trial or charges...it's the latest pResidential policy: ASSASSINATION...and bragging and gloating about it too...
