Obama orders mine safety records' inspected

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama ordered inspections on US mines with "troubling safety records," the White House said Thursday after the deaths of 29 miners in a West Virginia coal mine.

Obama will meet with Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health Joe Main "to receive a preliminary report" on the deadly mine accident "and the state of mine safety nationwide," the White House said in a statement.

Solis and Main "will report that the safety record at the Massey Upper Big Branch mine," the coal mine in West Virginia where the accident took place, "was deeply troubling."

While there are many responsible companies operating mines, "there are far too many mines where safety is inadequate."

2. Well, W Bush put a person from Massey Energy in charge of mine safety

and he might as well have been still working for Don Blakenship. Got a violation? Just
appeal it and go back and "run coal." The appeals will just pile up and up the mines can
say active. Got a legal judgement against Massey? Well then just appeal that judgement
up the chain to the West Virginia Supreme Court and Don's friends there will take care of it.

3. Ya know, these corporations have the rights

of individuals but none of the responsibilities. Ignoring these safety violations until people are killed is a criminal offense. At the very least, Manslaughter, 29 (at least) counts of it. Reckless endangerment for thousands. Is it already too late to "look back?" Or is it still "fresh enough" for us to hold the mine owners criminally liable? Corporatism sucks.. not much hope for the slaves (us)...
