Fall of Baghdad anniversary marked

Thousands of Iraqis have been holding demonstrations throughout Iraq to mark the fall of Baghdad during the 2003 US-led invasion.

Marchers on Friday called for an end to what they said was the continued occupation of their country by hundreds of thousands of foreign troops and military contractors.

<snip>

Iraqi broadcaster Alsumaria said the tens of thousands waved Iraqi flags, and trampled on US, UK and Israeli flags.

Marchers on Friday chanted slogans such as "yes, yes to unity" and "Sunni and Shia Muslims, we won't sell this country".

1. Meanwhile, the Americans acknowledged the Fall of Baghdad
by trying to forget the entire 8 year history of Iraq as a painful national nightmare. And many are still asking why Bush, Cheney, and the rest of the enablers are not being tried at the Haague and explaining why they needed to kill hundreds of thousands and break the country of Iraq based on a made up casus belli.

3. They could be protesting against ice cream and they would still trample Israeli flags.
It's a major faux pas to hold a protest in that part of the world without trampling an Israeli flag.

10. No. Trampling those flag make sense.
Their troops are in the country.

But why Israel? I guess you pretend they have good reason.

You never met an anti-Israel gesture you didn't like. You need to get over that.

4. time for a semi-regular tradition of mine
when I think of it, I email the RW columnist Kathleen Parker:

Dear Kathleen,

You never write about Iraq anymore. How about a column celebrating the anniversary of "Statue Day" in Baghdad?

Hey, remember this column you wrote in 2003?

http://townhall.com/columnists/KathleenParker/2003/04/12/liberation_tastes_like_crow_to_anti-war_crowd

What was that whimpering sound? Oh that. It's just the "Yes, but" crowd formerly known as the "anti-war pundits." Ignore them.

Saddam's statue had barely hit the ground in central Baghdad before America's armchair doomsayers began harrumphing a new caveat in which to couch this unseemly turn of events. One might almost think they didn't want Saddam to fall.

You couldn't help noticing the careful balance the antis tried to strike between reluctant admission and preachy admonition. The formula goes something like this: "Yes, we defeated Iraq, BUT . let's not get too carried away, it ain't over yet."

(...)

It's also hard to be humble when you're right, but guess who is both? Guess who first cautioned against glibness, hubris, immodesty and arrogance? Those mean men Dowd can never bring herself to address as adults: her Bushy, Rummy and Wolfie. The lead players in this epochal drama have spoken with the restraint and authority of grown-ups undistracted by childish antics, either from the pacifist nursery or from exuberant Iraqis tasting freedom, in some cases for the first time. "Let them rant" or "Let them loot," as the case may be, is an attitude of tolerance born of higher sights.

AREN'T YOU PROUD of us? For most of this past week, as an overwhelmingly successful, lightning-quick Anglo-American military assault liberated Iraq's capital city, and ordinary Baghdadis poured into the streets to kiss our GIs and stomp on pictures of Saddam Hussein, THE SCRAPBOOK has remained the soul of magnanimity and restraint.

Here in our office there's this giant archive of newsclips, transcripts, and Internet postings we collected in the months preceding the war, wherein a world community of jackasses confidently predicted that the events lately unfolding on our television screens could not and would not ever take place. And you can imagine the temptation, we're sure: A lesser SCRAPBOOK would throw open the file boxes and run through the streets with treasures like these, laughing hysterically.

5. A day of national tradedy indeed for all Iraqis.
Tragedy upon tragedy. US and Russian imperialists foist Baathist criminals on the country, then the US further destroys it.

11. Oh joy – a celebration!
I have always wondered…. Did the German people celebrate the liberation of Norway in 1940? Did the German press of 1939 talk about Operation Polish Freedom?

In 1941 did the people of Denmark celebrate the fall of their original government the previous spring of 1940?

How long do these celebrations continue?

Chalabi's platoon staged a "celebration" and the whore media made it look like the whole country was in the streets.
