Geithner hails economic partnership with India

Tuesday, April 6, 2010; 10:36 AM

NEW DELHI -- India and the United States announced a new economic partnership Tuesday that offers "huge opportunities" for both countries, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner said during a two-day visit to India.

The trip is part of the Obama administration's efforts to deepen relations with one of the world's fastest-growing economies.

Although there were few specifics, Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee invited U.S. companies to invest in the fast-developing country's booming construction industry, which is building airports, railroads and 4,400 miles of highway a year, a government goal to try and make freight traffic more efficient, while spreading wealth into India's vast countryside.

The world's second-most-populated nation, with 1.2 billion people, desperately needs better roads to support its thriving economy, India's leaders say, especially as it emerges as an economic power on the world stage. Nearly 40 percent of India's world-class agricultural products, such as mangos and tomatoes, spoil because there are delays getting them to market, according to Indian economists.

1. I Think In Searching for Roads, India Will Be Taken for a Ride
They should have prevented Geithner's entry into the country, and let only real construction people in.

2. This is disgusting. If U.S. companies have money to invest, why
are they being encouraged to invest in India? I think they should first invest in the U.S. in light of the unemployment rate here.

5. However because of the conservative policies that brought us the high unemployment here we are not
one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Timmie and his parasitic friends need a healthy Host if they are going to be successful parasites

4. When criminals like geithner R allowed to run the show...
another campaign 'promise' goes out the door (re: 'support corporations that create jobs here instead of overseas')?

7. Uh oh.
If Geithner hails something, it probably means average folks are going to get screwed.

10. I agree. This can't be good, if he likes it. Just the opposite. Sort of like NAFTA.
Or repealing Glass Steagall.

12. Makes a lot of sense to
Build up India to handle all of the business and jobs that have left the US for India while we rot from the inside out due to lack of funding. Meanwhile extension of unemployment benefits are finished which were keeping small communities afloat and seniors across the country will be graduating with out any prospects of becoming productive adults. When will this house of greased cards fall in on itself, implode like the twin towers?

16. "huge opportunities" = "for the 'Upper Crusts" of both nations"
The peons . . . er, not s'much. Labor power will continue to be a race to the bottom while inequality skyrockets.

"Poverty" is the new "Working/Middle" classes.

"All in all, I think we hit the jackpot." - Ronald Reagan

17. Let me explain how it's a win-win
The elite in the US win because they get cheap labor.

The poor in India win because they get jobs.

See? Good for both countries.

It's all a matter of perspective.
