NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt won the support of the largest labor union in the entertainment industry Tuesday when the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees endorsed his 2004 presidential bid.
"It is time to have a president that understands the struggles of most Americans and shares their life experiences," Gephardt said in accepting the endorsement. "Nobody will be left behind every day that I am president."
Gephardt, D-Missouri, has had strong union support throughout his congressional career and in his 1988 run for the White House. Recent polls show he has a narrow lead over the rest of the nine-member Democratic field in Iowa, site of the first voting of 2004, but his most recent financial report showed his campaign fell short of its fund-raising goal by more than $1 million.
