Because of federal government-imposed restrictions, members of one of the country's largest legal organizations are being advised not to defend detainees being held in Guantanamo, Cuba. {emph. added}
Lawrence Goldman, president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, questioned on Tuesday the legality and ethics of the restrictions. He says they so severely hamstring legal representation of tribunal defendants that he's recommending that organization members not become involved.
"I will not ask them to boycott, I would suggest it is a matter of individual choice. But I think the choice should be to refuse," Goldman said.
