DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina police responding to a domestic violence call have arrested the woman who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of rape.

WRAL-TV reported 33-year-old Crystal Gale Mangum was arrested late Wednesday on charges she assaulted her boyfriend.

Durham County jail records indicate Mangum is charged with attempted murder, arson, assault and battery, identity theft, communicating threats, damage to property, resisting an officer and child endangerment.

Durham police said they found Mangum and 33-year-old Milton Walker fighting. Police said Mangum went into a bathroom and set some clothes on fire in a bathtub.

I am eagerly awaiting an update at Durham-in-Wonderland.

The unpleasantness resulted in many a post at DU at the time. Some people, but not all, saw the investigation as an example of prosecutorial misconduct. You don't have to be a teabagger to know that the government has tremendous power when conducting an investigation. On occasion, that power is misused. If we are not vigilant, who will be vigilant for us?

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Framing this poor womyn.

According to the Duke rape dead-enders, I am the leader of the DU "racist heteropatriarchy" and I should have been hanged in public along side the Duke boys as I was equally guilty for doubting the claims of the said performance artist.

Duke lacrosse accuser charged with attempted murder

FROM STAFF REPORTS
DURHAM -- Durham police have charged Crystal Gail Mangum, 31, with attempting to kill her boyfriend early this morning. Mangum is the woman who wrongly accused three Duke lacrosse players of rape in 2006.

A judge this morning ordered that she remain in jail on a $1 million bond. Wearing a white jail jumpsuit, Mangum kept her head down during her court appearance and said nothing as the charges from this morning’s alleged incident were read.

According to authorities, Mangum, 31, and her boyfriend, Milton Walker, were fighting in their apartment at 2220 Lincoln St. She then set fire to Walker’s clothing inside a bathroom tub, located in a bathroom in the middle of the apartment, police said. She tried to start another fire after officers arrived, according to an arrest warrant read during Mangum’s first court appearance this morning.

Police said Mangum also threatened to stab Walker...

19. Fox
Edited on Thu Feb-18-10 12:22 PM by mahatmakanejeeves
had the most attention-grabbing headline, so that's what I went with.

I generally prefer to link to newspapers than to TV stations. TV station links try to open up with a lot of pointless graphics, and newspaper sites do not. In this case, the link went to Fox News and not a local Fox affiliate, so Fox got the nod.

There's another reason I linked to Fox. Take a look at the story I quoted, if you would, please. Fox got the story from the Associated Press. I assume the AP got the story from a reporter at the Durham Herald-Sun. The reporter probably got the story from listening to a police scanner, after which he called police HQ to get the correct charges. Either that, or he got a page from a breaking news service, and the breaking news service got the story from a scanner listener. In the end, Radio Shack and Bearcat are to blame, or scanner listeners, or electromagnetic radiation. Whatever the case may be, when I saw the Associated Press as the source, I knew I was on firm footing.

As I write, the story is number one on the DU website, as well as the top story at Google News. You can expect it to be on the evening TV news tonight as well. NBC might have to shelve one of its heartwarming stories about the athletes in Vancouver to make room for it, but they will. It's not going away.

Thank you for your inquiry.

She does have a share of the blame, but there are no doubt many disturbed people who make false claims that never go anywhere because the DA recognizes it as false. This DA took a disturbed young woman and used her for all he oculd get out of her.

Since, well, y'know, the DA was running for office at the time and saw this as a slam dunk case. The investigation afterward showed prosecutorial misconduct. The DA deserves blame for wasting court resources and abusing his power, but false claims shouldn't be tolerated either.

Duke Rape Accuser: 'I'm Going to Stab You {Expletive}!'

Go to the second page.

Duke Lacrosse Prosecutor Mike Nifong Reacts

As pressure mounted and the accuser's account of the alleged attack began to fall apart in late 2006, Nifong asked the state attorney general to appoint a special prosecutor, as Nifong was by then the target of an ethics investigation by the state bar association for his handling of the prosecution. In April, 2007 North Carolina State Attorney General Roy Cooper dropped all charges against the students.

Three months later, Nifong resigned as district attorney, just days before he was found guilty of a battery of ethics violations and disbarred at a dramatic state bar association disciplinary hearing. A tearful Nifong publicly apologized to the three players.

Reached by ABC News today, Nifong initially said he doubted press reports about Mangum's arrest, saying he found news reports "to be of questionable value."

When told that police had confirmed the charges against Mangnum, Nifong said, "I'm not involved in the district attorney's office in any way. I'm not involved in law enforcement in any way, so I don't really know that I have anything to say."

Asked whether Mangum's arrest gave him any new regrets about prosecuting the Duke students, Nifong sighed audibly and said, "I don't really have any comment for you at all on this" and hung up.

46. If they cared so deeply about victims' rights and false accusations
which they were quite pleased to lecture everyone about, even though each of them was typically a person of privilege, I'd just be more impressed if they carried on their battle on behalf of others.

I found the entire proceeding so laced with irony. Not once during the whole thing did anyone point out that poor people, and people of color, have had to deal with this type of accusation for years. You'd think that it would have brought about a broader realization about people who are falsely accused. But it didn't.

How is asserting that whatsherface could have falsely accused an angry looking black man of rape and got away with it at all similar to asserting that the real victims in that Duke case ought to be "comic book heroes?" How is asserting that, because of their wealth, connections, and prestige, your average Duke student has an easier time in the court systems than your average American at all similar to claiming that those Duke student ought to be "comic book heroes?"

Your reading comprehension apparently needs work...

To answer your question though, rarely. Of course that doesn't excuse her reckless disregard for the lives of her children.

And the clothes burned in the tub! Won't anyone think of them?

Crime must be mighty slack in that part of the country. Out here, we have like, actual criminals, instead of boyfriend-girlfriend fights that end with clothes smoldering in a tub.

Hmmm...wonder how many Klansmen have ever served time there?

Now, you are going to tell me that it was a 'safe' fire, right, 'cause it was in the bathtub?

And that she was obviously stone cold sober (from the mugshot posted) and in complete control of herself and no danger to others......

She's lucky she didn't get tased.

maybe to the boyfriend's ego.
Now if anyone might suggest some counseling for her, kids into alternate care while she gets it, drug rehab, sure, good, that will fix it.

Why doesn't anyone want to discuss the good ol' Klan which has done much worse and in that part of the country and not only got a free pass, but were the bosses of the place?

Plus, lacrosse isn't even a real sport! No fans ever killed another team's fans over a lacrosse game! And it's even French sounding, for gawd's sake! :)

59. If I'm not mistaken
When NFL player Andre Rison's house burned down in the 90s, it was because he and his girlfriend, the late 'Left Eye' of TLC fame, were arguing and she attempted to burn some of his clothes in a bathtub. The fire got out of control and spread - so it's a pretty irresponsible thing to do when there are children in the house. And what does the Klan or the crime rate there have to do with what she did? She should be held responsible for her actions in this case, regardless of the history of the area or its current crime rate.

A Story for Martin Luther King Day

On the night Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, CP Ellis got on the phone and quickly organized a meeting. His friends showed up at his Durham, North Carolina, gas station, and sat on Coca-Cola crates CP had arranged in a circle. At CP’s direction, the men stood, and each one opened a bottle of beer and, in unison, they drank a toast to the unknown gunman who had killed Dr. King.

CP Ellis was the Exalted Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan in Durham, North Carolina.

Burning Crosses Signal Return of Ku Klux Klan
by Andrew Buncombe in Washington

Police in Durham, North Carolina, have launched an investigation after three crosses were set alight in one night - triggering fears that the Ku Klux Klan may have targeted the city. Yellow leaflets, purportedly produced by the KKK, were found at the site of one of the burning crosses.

I mean, those vampires were just all over those innocent lambs from the lacrosse team a few years ago, right? Obviously, we can't trust the media for information with their proven past record of getting it wrong. So from her trial and conviction, what happened there to anyone, including her kids?

What did the people who saw the crosses burning in 2005 in Durham experience?

88. The Truth about KC Johnson: The Small Mean World of the Duke Lacrosse Blogger
KC in Wonderland: An Overview

No one exploited the Duke lacrosse scandal better than an obscure history professor, Robert “KC” Johnson.

Johnson was initially denied tenure at Brooklyn College, and blamed this in part on the forces of political correctness and the supposed left-wing domination of American universities. The Duke lacrosse case gave him his chance for revenge. Johnson denounced Duke faculty for what he charged was their failure to defend three white lacrosse players against rape allegations made by a black woman hired to strip at a drunken team party. His telling made the case into a parable of political correctness gone crazy.

There was only one problem with this picture: it was all wrong ...

141. I don't want anyone falsely accused of anything.
For starters the mere accusation can ruin lives. Secondly it makes it less likely that actual rapes will be reported, putting more women in danger.

145. I wonder if she'll get a fair trial
Everyone here seems to assume she's guilty :hide:

148. Probably won't go to trial. The attempted murder charges will go away,
though the arson and endangerment of children won't. The back-and-forth with her boyfriend caused one of her kids to call 911 in fear of her mother's life, so that's a fracas between two folk, and I might expect the charges to go away there, too. I'd guess that if she did set a fire, there's a plea bargain, and she might lose the kids
