Arizona quits Western climate endeavor
Source: Az Central

Arizona will no longer participate in a groundbreaking attempt to limit greenhouse-gas emissions across the West, a change in policy by Gov. Jan Brewer that will include a review of all the state's efforts to combat climate change.

Brewer stopped short of pulling Arizona out of the multistate coalition that plans to regulate greenhouse gases starting in 2012. But she made it clear in an executive order that Arizona will not endorse the emission-control plan or any program that could raise costs for consumers and businesses.

State officials said the policy shift was rooted in concerns that the controversial emissions plan would slow the state's economic recovery. Brewer says the state should focus less on regulations and more on renewable energy and investments by businesses that can create green jobs.

The governor also ordered the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to take another look at stricter vehicle-emissions rules set to take effect in 2012. Automakers said the rules, based on those adopted by California, would raise the cost of a new car significantly.

5. No, I don't think they will....my folks live there and I keep...
saying it is a stupid place to live since the drought there will just get worse and millions of people moving on will make it worse. My mom listens to all the local news. She says they have lots of water and there is nothing to worry about. This winter they have been getting more rain than normal and the local news keeps talking about how unusual this is but they never talk about climate change and how that is affecting the weather.

No, I think most of the people in AZ will be completely surprised when climate change really becomes evident and they will fight doing anything to reduce emissions as hard as they can.

10. Read the comments on the article
These are the "morans" I live around. It is becoming clear that continuously coming in near the bottom of education spending is taking it's toll. If I ever have children, they will not grow up here.

13. It's one thing to talk about the decisions of the officials
and it's even okay to blame the majority of the voters who put them there.

But the replies in this thread are getting a little uncivil, blaming the entire state for the (stupid) actions of some.

We did, after all, elect Janet Napolitano. Some of us elected Harry Mitchell to boot out JD Hayworth. Some of us elected Raul Grijalva.

We ain't all stupid and those of us who aren't may just start alerting on some uncivil DUers.

Tansy Gold, who loves her adopted home state of Arizona and has worked to make it a better place for all Arizonans and all the folks who visit.

agree with him on everything, I agreed with JD Hayworth on NOTHING. (It goes without saying that I never voted for him).

Blanket statements about communities smother everyone, not just the "bad guys."
