India successfully tests nuclear-capable missile
Source: AP

NEW DELHI – India again successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable missile Sunday that can hit targets across much of Asia and the Middle East, an official said.

It was the fourth test of the Agni III missile, the official at the Defence Research and Development Organization said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The first attempt in 2006 failed, but last two tests were successful.

India's current arsenal of missiles is largely intended for confronting archrival Pakistan. The Agni III, in contrast, is India's longest-range missile, designed to reach 3,000 kilometers (1,900 miles) — putting China's major cities well into range, as well as Middle Eastern targets.

2. Pakistan is the bigger concern
Edited on Sun Feb-07-10 11:01 AM by nyy1998
4 wars between the two countries and numerous terrorist attacks coming from Pakistan(include the unforgettable Mumbai attacks). India views them as the main threat.

As for China, both countries don't like each other, but they're have been several diplomatic overtures in the past few years and their relations are starting to thaw out. THat said, they still have a lot of disputes including Kashmir and Tibet(and several other regions) but I highly doubt we'll see another conflict between these two countries.

4. Agni III and upcoming Agni IV
are primarily meant to bring China in range. China uses Pakistan as a proxy and China is the regional bully.

Agni V, the final version, would be an ICBM and it will use the GSLV-III motor.

Pakistan, a small tinpot country has been artificially inflated by aid from US and China -- a stupid policy in the long run. Pakistan would have disintegrated and balkanized if not for demented Reagan's and his stupid cowboy Ollie North's policy. We now face large-scale, long-range terrorism emanating from Pakistan because of those mistakes.

5. India see itself as the major regional power.
It wants influence to match, including a Security Council seat. The comparison Indians make nowadays is with China, not Pakistan. In fact, I'd say Indians resent being compared to Pakistan, which is much smaller and viewed as a failed state. Dangerous but failed.
