In wake of ruling, Wall Street CEOs form conservative ‘action tank’
Source: By Raw Story

This week, a group that includes some of the wealthiest Republican CEOs on Wall Street have formed a group to take advantage of new fundraising possibilities for the GOP.

The Supreme Court ruling could potentially allow the group, called the American Action Network, to take unlimited contributions from corporations for use in political campaigns.

snip---------------------

According to the New York Times, the group also includes:

"Republicans who are donors, board members or both include Haley Barbour, the governor of Mississippi; Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida; Mr. Barbour a former chairman of the Republican Party; Fred Malek, an investor and official in the Nixon and first Bush administrations."

1. I can think of a quote attributed to Stonewall Jackson, about the Union, that

would fit well with these individuals.

enemy were beating them back.
At the first battle of Bull Run, July 1861.

"Under divine blessing, we must rely on the bayonet when firearms cannot be
furnished"
- Stonewall Jackson, letter accompanying his requisition for 1000 pikes.
April 1861

the ranks!"

am obliged to sweat them tonight, so that I may save their blood tomorrow."
- General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson

"Once you get them running, you stay right on top of them, and that way a
small force can defeat a large one every time... Only thus can a weaker
country cope with a stronger; it must make up in activity what it lacks in
strength."
- General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson

"Who could not conquer with such troops as these?"

3. Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Scalia and Kennedy destroyed whatever respect for the SCOTUS Americans may
have had.

To think, I used to be in awe of that body, even under "I've designed my own blingy impeachment outfit" Rehnquist.

Is spitting in the face of a SCOTUS Justice punishable as terrorism? No particular reason for asking. Just curious.

what with no brains and all, but an action tank is perfect for them. Every time their knees jerk, they can donate money to it.

May I suggest they call themselves the "League of American Fascists"? Has a nice ring of reality around it.

11. Most people use the term "think tank" when they form these kind of groups.
Edited on Sun Feb-07-10 04:23 AM by superconnected
Yet, this groups calls itself, "Conservative action tank". I guess it's a bit too much to expect them to have a conservative action _think_ tank.

Either way, bet it tanks.

13. Now that the dancing supremes have made free speech nothing more than a commodity,
what will their next decision be?

First they stopped the counting of our ballots and picked our president for us (and that was such a wise choice :sarcasm:). Then, they made greedy corporations people.

And America's response was.....nothing. The people didn't rise in protest, they didn't march in the streets when a bunch of ignorant fools decided our votes should NOT be counted.

Now they made another one of those ridiculous, torturous decisions that will have lasting impact and destroy what little we have left of a democracy and the America's response was .....nothing.

Since Americans could care less about how distorted and perverted the dancing supremes make our democracy, can you imagine what their next momentous decision will be?

14. It's not just the people, it's huge problem with the Democratic Party!
If the same thing would have happened to the Republicans, they would have censured the Supreme Court and threatened to impeach them all by now - along with all the usual the right wing threats that come from talk radio.

Democratic politicians whined a bit to start with, but they will probably let this dies like they often do with other issues that are actually important to Democratic voters. The odds of them launching a sustained effort to frame the debate and put pressure on the court are zero, if not less.

15. People Are Just Beginning to Understand
the deep and insidious reach of hegemonic corporatism into every aspect human life, from politics to consciousness to the genetic code itself.

It will all get worse, much worse, I promise you. Every aspect of existence, from biochemistry to spirituality, will be dominated and raped by ultra-capitalism.

Although I despise Justice Scalia with all my heart, it is difficult for me to visualize that foul, pudgy little crypto-fascist as the ultimate villain in this decision: the SCOTUS simply sided with the current wave: they smelled the zeitgeist and decided they could also wallow in the stench. As long as our cultural identity is that of "consumer", money IS free speech and corporatism will dominate existence. There is no "us" and "them", however emotionally satisfying it may be to believe so. We are all creating this nightmare together and until some kind of mass evolution, enlightenment or breakthrough, we are all very much truly and deeply fucked.
