Obama Plays Down Military Role in Yemen
Source: Sarah Wheaton, The New York Times

President Obama said he has “no intention of sending U.S. boots on the ground” to Yemen and Somalia amid mounting concern about terrorist cells in those countries.

In excerpts of an interview with People magazine released on Sunday, Mr. Obama said that the “border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan remains the epicenter of Al Qaeda,” though he acknowledged that the group’s branch in Yemen has become “a more serious problem.”

But his administration is seeking to emphasize international cooperation, rather than military action, to confront the problem in Yemen.

“I never rule out any possibility in a world that is this complex,” said Mr. Obama. But, he added, “in countries like Yemen, in countries like Somalia, I think working with international partners is most effective at this point.”

1. It always starts like this.
I think they have a "play book" for going to war, and easing us into it. They probably did did studies and figured out the best way to manipulate us through the whole process, step by step. Like a damn infomercial.

6. There's always a "play book"
Military planners create plans for virtually every scenario. Just because one exists doesn't mean there's an intent to carry it out. We have lots of plans in case we go to war with China...doesn't mean we're on the verge of attacking the PRC.

2. The President knows more about the situation in Yemen than we do
I will support him whatever he deems the role of our Armed Forces in Yemen is.

9. I hope he sends contract mercenaries, I wouldn't mind more of them being blown up.

I'm sure the Arabs wouldn't mind it either.

3. No boots -- so you're just going to keep bombing civilians, then?

5. They are everywhere
Like gangs in the U.S., but we've chosen Afghanistan. Is it more ground zero? Yes, but it's like fighting the war on Gangs by sending all our cops to South Central L.A. There are gangs everywhere, and the cops aren't going to eradicate them. Making it uncool to be a gangster would be the goal.

7. I guess special forces don't count as troops.
May be some one in the pentagon could give him a briefing.

8. "no intention of sending U.S. boots on the ground"
"I never rule out any possibility in a world that is this complex,"

....oh dear, we're already there....of course, there's money to be made, women and children to be slaughtered, resources to be looted, freedoms to deny, American jobs to create....

....we need to stop working hard, investing or buying and starve this corporate beast....we will suffer but the pain will eventually subside....then the world might live again....there is no good ending to all of this....
