Colorado resort legalises cannabis, but not on the ski slopes
Breckenridge is boasting that it has become the Amsterdam of the Rockies

Joanna Walters
The Observer, Sunday 27 December 2009
Article history

It's already being dubbed "the Amsterdam of the Rockies" and an après-ski spliff is likely to become almost as common as a beer when cannabis possession is legalised in the hip mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado, on 1 January.

Well known as a laid-back party resort characterised by baggy-trousered snowboarders and a vigorous happy hour, Breckenridge voted last month to relax marijuana laws.

From New Year's Day there will be no criminal or civil penalties imposed on anyone carrying up to an ounce of marijuana – or the paraphernalia usually associated with it, such as long rolling papers, a small pipe or a bong. That also goes for tourists, in a resort popular with British visitors who flock there for the exciting ski slopes and the exuberant nightlife.

"I'm already getting calls from people outside the state asking questions, such as 'Can I do it while I'm skiing?', 'Can I bring it to my hotel room?', that kind of thing," said Kim Green, spokeswoman for the Breckenridge police department.

2. I LOVE IT
And Breckenridge (and if you can, check out Breckenridge Brewery) is a lovely destination.
If you are going to be in the Rockies, and you can't afford Aspen or are afraid of Charlie Sheen, Breckenridge is the place you need to go.

3. Breckenridge rocks
Especially when you check out the town, not the ski slopes.

Can't wait to smoke weed and piss my wife off when I go up to the mountains!

6. If you ski stoned you could kill some one!
Smoke pot or ski but if you do both I hope they throw every law in the books at you. With freedom comes responsibility.

9. same as with skiing when drunk......
difference is...drunks will skii reckless and fast and a stoner is more likely to go sit by the fire in the lodge and eat chocolate cookies.....or ski at five miles an hour :P rofl

would you mind posting a link to a news story or an article referencing a skiing fatality caused by a stoned skier?

23. I quit skiing after my last attempt three years ago.
After being up on the summit and skiing my way down, I decided I had enough.

But a walk around the beautiful town of Breckenridge beats skiing for me anytime.

The last time I did that (walking around Breckenridge), I was too sick to ski, but skiied a year later.

12. Laughable
I have skied most of Colorado's fine slopes for most of my life.
I can probably count on both hands the number of times that someone sharing a lift or even a gondola ride did NOT ask for or offer a toke or a blow (back in the old days).
I have sat in the restaurant atop Aspen Mountain listening to tourists complain about the smoke in the gondola and how no one seems to be concerned.
And then there is Telluride------

14. I doubt the Breckenridge PD ever had the resources to go after
pot smokers in the first place; OR the desire. It's been laid-back since we first started hanging out there in 1970, lol.

17. Not only that, but the place is so crowded that you're crossing skis
and falling down. I hated Breckenridge when I lived in Colorado.

21. never had a problem with the
Fuzz in Breck. nor "Skistoned" (Keystone) either. Vail and Aspen are a bit anal, whereas Copper mountain is relaxed with ashtrays on the patio.
To-Hell-you-ride (Telluride) has always been low key without any trouble.

Steamboat... Just keep it out of the eyesight of Children.

Breck is where I like to go camping in the summertime when their are no TOURISTS. Its a Zoo otherwise.

in July, theirs a nice blue grass festival over the hill here in Fairplay.

Awesome Chinese Food up the road the otherway in Frisco too.

On edit Alma has a great bar too... nice view from the patio.

Puff puff pass.

yeah I am spoiled.

25. Good: when the snow got thin, skiers might trip over the plants.
Eastern Colorado is flat enough to raise almost all the Cannabis the state would need. ;-)

Of course, the state could probably use the revenue from SUI {skiing under the influence) fines.
