Kucinich to force House vote on troop withdrawal from Afghanistan and Pakistan

Rep. Dennis Kucinich plans to force a House of Representatives vote early next year on whether to withdraw U.S troops from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Cleveland Democrat announced today that he's begun circulating a letter to colleagues, that asks if they'd be willing to cosponsor his two privileged resolutions to "trigger a timeline for a timely withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan and Pakistan" and invoke the War Powers Resolution of 1973 to assert the Constitutional right of Congress "to decide whether or not America enters into war, continues a war, or otherwise introduces armed forces or material into combat zones."

Although President Barack Obama has asserted that prior actions by Congress permit him to respond militarily to the attacks of September 11, 2001, Kucinich says that shouldn't keep Congress from revisiting the war. He says the United States should keep trying to bring Osama Bin Laden to justice, but pursuing wars throughout the Middle East to find him backfires by inflaming anti-American sentiment.

Kucinich says he was motivated to act by hearing Afghan President Hamid Karzai assert that his country is likely to need U.S. financial and training aid for the next 15 to 20 years...

Kucinich Circulating Privileged Resolutions to End Wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Submitted by davidswanson on Wed, 2009-12-09 16:08

Washington D.C. (December 9, 2009) –...

“We cannot afford these wars. We cannot afford the loss of lives. We cannot afford the cost to taxpayers. We cannot afford to fail to exercise our constitutional right to end the wars.

“Please sign onto the privileged resolutions to end the wars and to bring our troops home.

Stand up for the troops. Stand up for the truth. Stand up for the Constitution and Congress’ responsibility.”

Kucinich: Are we in Afghanistan to Fight or to Fund the Taliban?

WASHINGTON - December 8 - Following a speech on the Floor of the House of Representative, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following statement:

“U.S. contractors are paying U.S. tax dollars to the Taliban in order to protect the delivery of U.S. shipments of U.S. goods to U.S. soldiers so that our soldiers can fight the Taliban.

In an investigative expose, The Nation magazine reveals “how the U.S. funds the Taliban” and “with pentagon cash, contractors bribe the insurgents not to attack supply for U.S. troops.”

“Another quote: “The real secret to trucking in Afghanistan is ensuring security on the perilous roads patrolled by warlords, insurgents, tribal militias and Taliban commandeers. The American executive I spoke to was fairly specific about it. The army is basically paying the Taliban not to shoot at them,” and then the Taliban uses that money to shoot at our troops. What a racket.

“Are we in Afghanistan to fight or to fund the Taliban? Or both?”

I have no idea what berni's opinion on impeachment is. But all he did was state the facts.

For what it's worth, I supported impeachment long before it was brought up in the House.

(as they so often do lately in their drive to the right) don't reflect a progressive stance on the party very well at all.

I back DK on every one of those votes - including the one against the corporate friendly House Health Care Reform bill.

Can you identify specific progressive policies that he voted against? Otherwise, all you're saying is that he will not get in line behind his Party when his Party is acting like Republicans. That he puts progressive principles about Party and his own selfish bests interests. That IS a progressive stance.

9. Only if the challengers...
...use the ammunition. There are so many issues where the Democrats could blow the GOP out of the water, but they are too nice to actually list the facts. Instead, they let the pigs (no offense to our porcine brethren) frame the narrative. I would love to see more like Grayson get up there and punch the bullies in the nose, but I don't have much hope of that ever happening.

More so. If a Republican is in office, their war vote is expected by their constituents who put them there. This is ammunition for Democratic primaries to can the hawkish right of the party.

I believe Grayson was wealthy before he went to Congress. Maybe that is what we have to do in order to get a true two-party system again, elect people like Buffet and Soros.

I want a roll call vote.
How these "representatives" vote will determine my support or opposition.
There is a very short list of Dems I am willing to support.
This list is primarily determined by their support for a Single Payer Health Care system and opposition to dumb wars.

The Democratic Party is a BIG TENT, but there is NO ROOM for those
who advance the agenda of THE RICH (Corporate Owners) at the EXPENSE of LABOR and the POOR.

This is the right move. Whether congress has the will to challenge the administration on the war remains to be seen. If they are going to say that acts of congress permit them to pursue the war strategy then it will take an act of congress to end it.

52. Re:
"WHY is it that it's always a lone voice speaking truth to power and representing the true will of the people?"

THIS JUST IN!

95% of politicians say they represent the will of the people.

76. No, but he does make Democrats who act like Republicans look bad.
Then again, they don't need him to make them look bad. They do that on their own.

77. If DK REALLY did this as a response to Karzai
...he's an idiot. Karzai is an opportunist trying to remain in power while Obama does an end run on him.

If DK is doing this for other reasons, but is linking it to Karzai's announcement for "punch", he thinks we're idiots.

Judging by this thread, I'm not sure at all.

78. We pay the Taliban not to shoot our troops and the Taliban uses that money to shoot our troops.
Edited on Thu Dec-10-09 09:05 AM by No Elephants
Sounds worse than Vietnam. At a minimum, it doesn't sound like anything in which we should remain mired.

Then again, this war never seemed to me something in which we should have enmired ourselves.

Hunt down Al Qaeeda like the mass murderers they are, wherever they are hiding NOW, not where they were hiding eight years ago. Duuuhhhhh.

Stop killing people in Iraq and Afghanistan (and anywhere) who never did anything to us.

Stop funding the Taliban, the corrupt Karzai clan and the international "military-industrial complex" criminals.

Stop pandering to other war mongerers for political reasons (or for whatever reasons).

80. Kucinich and Sanders
Residing in Alaska, my own congressional delegation is worthless, culturally and politically as backward as the majority of the Alaska electorate. Dennis Kucinich and Bernie Sanders receive the majority of my correspondence because they are among a handful of elected officials that don't prostitute themselves to Wall Street.

As a leading progressive recently said, the children of any elected official that votes for war should be the first to be sent to fight. Of course, that will never happen because the children of the economic and political elite are the nation's future economic and political elite, and if they were sent to war with the hoi polloi, who would be left to man the plutocracy?

90. Dennis is right to do this but all the lap dogs in congress will inevitably vote this down.
How sad that what makes good sense is so at odds with the general order. I am so disgusted by the corrupt politics going on. Every day they keep pushing against us is a day closer to the final revolution.
