A U.S. serviceman was killed in a militant attack on an ISAF convoy in Afghanistan on Tuesday night, bringing the total U.S. losses in the country to 300 this year, the ISAF said on Wednesday.

This year's tally is already twice as high as the 2008 death toll of 155, making it the deadliest year of the eight-year-long U.S.-led military campaign.

October 2009 was the worst month of the campaign for the U.S., with 58 U.S. servicemen killed, more than the total tally for 2004.

3. What was the original objective of the war in Afghanistan and how is it still applicable today?
esp. given that al Qaeda, as far as we know, no longer exists in Afghanistan.

Was the original objective to solely engage the Taliban? I'm thinking not.
