(Sen.) Ensign: ‘My Wife And I Have Worked Things Out’

Republican Says He Won't Step Down

LAS VEGAS -- Nevada Sen. John Ensign resisted calls for his resignation Monday, saying his affair with a friend's wife had strengthened his marriage and would not end his political career.

“I was elected to a six-year term, and I fully intend on serving that out,” he said during an interview with a conservative radio host.

The 51-year-old Republican had stayed silent on the affair for months, but may have been prompted to speak out following a recent Nightline interview with Doug Hampton, the husband of his former mistress.

Although the affair ended the longtime friendship with Hampton, Ensign said he's grown closer to his wife Darlene.

“My wife and I have worked things out. We're doing better than we've ever done before,” he said.

It would be helpful if we could find audio of him calling for Clinton's resignation specifically because of sexual dalliances.

It may even help Reid retain his job if he can tie the republican candidate to Ensign in some way (just getting him to comment should help).

12. Right here >>>>>>>>>>>>
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/06/16/ensign-affair/

In 1998, while running for Nevada’s Senate seat against Harry Reid, Ensign called on President Clinton to resign in light of his admitted affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky:

“I came to that conclusion recently, and frankly it’s because of what he put his whole Cabinet through and what he has put the country through,” Ensign said Thursday, becoming the first member of the Nevada delegation to call for Clinton to quit. “He has no credibility left.”

18. Thanks... but not quite what I was looking for
Edited on Mon Nov-30-09 02:44 PM by FBaggins
What he "put the cabinet and country through" wasn't just the sexual daliances. The "called on Clinton to resign in light of his admitted affair" was thingprogress' words.

OTOH...it worked on Gingritch... why not Ensign?

On edit - I found something closer to what I wanted:

"There's too many people that paint with a broad brush that we're all corrupt, we're all amoral. … And having these kinds of things happen, whether it's a Republican or Democratic senator — we certainly have had plenty of Democratic scandals in the past — we need people who are in office who will hold themselves to a little higher standard"

33. that doesn't prove your point
was he merely referring to the affair, or to the subsequent lying to the people and lying under oath.

since he's talking about credibility, i would say it's more likely than not, he was referring to the lying under oath

19. What about Sen. Diaper Dave Vitter (R) ?
The Republicon Senate gave that little stinker a Standing O after his diaper-hooker escapades were, um, briefly exposed, and then covered up again...

3. Bwa-ha-HAH!1 Yeah, "It's my mistress' pesky ex-husband that's the problem!1"
Or he's "religious," so has he already made the announcement that God has forgiven him or that HE has forgiven himself, so we should all move along now, nothing to see here?!1 And he's a LAWmaker, so he can change those ethics laws and stuff!1

11. He just doesn't get it
It isn't just the affair, it's everything involved. Getting the son a job and the payout from his parents is just the beginning of the breach of ethics. He shouldn't represent the state of Nevada never the less the United States of America. Just my opinion here.

Yes, doing the horizontal tango with any skank that's available usually does wonders for a marriage.

17. Whether or not he has worked things out with his wife
has nothing to do with whether he broke the law by using public/party money to pay his mistress and her relatives, and then fired them all when the affair ended. It seems to me that he's broken campaign finance laws, as well as sexual harassment laws, among others.

21. Gee, I'm so relieved
I can finally sleep at night knowing Ensign and his wife have "worked things out"!

You know, I don't a rats ass about politicians marriages. I care about policy and what they do for their constituents. Just because they care about everyone elses personal lives, they think we should care about theirs. The condition of his marriage has nothing to do with the fact that he probably broke the law.

It's NOT about the cheating; it's about the ethics violations, you idiot.

It's bad enough voters like me are stuck with the idiot Jim Gibbons as governor without being stuck with an idiot for a senator.

There's nothing worse than an asshole like Ensign who spends his life judging everybody else and telling them how to behave, then changes the rules when HE gets caught.

37. Everybody lets get a kleenex
his wife forgave him and now his marriage is strong. If Ensign don't get his lying ass out of here. And what makes him think we really care if he and his wife worked it out.Look he got off easy in my opinion. Had that been the average everyday joe he would have done his press conference with a bandage across his head or at least a busted out car window. Does he really think that excuses him from ethics violations, bribery, and flat out lying. oh thats right he didn't do it his mom and dad give big gifts. They the republicons that is are always referring to their high moral standards i wonder how high or low was his standards to get under his friends wife dress. Mr. Ensign, he should get used to that name because politics is over for him,can get back with us in a month with thirty eight days. Maybe he could get his old friends job as a lobbyist,i mean there is a vacancy.:D :D :D One thing is for sure at the rate they keep going we will soon see all their moral standards probably hiking up that old appalachian trail:nopity: :nopity:
