Lugar: Let's Put Health Care On Hold To Deal With Afghanistan

One of President Barack Obama's closest Republican allies in the Senate urged him to put health care reform on the backburner and focus on Afghanistan.

Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), a trusted GOP voice on foreign policy matters, told CNN's "State of the Union" that in light of a forthcoming increase in troops to Afghanistan, Democrats should turn their attention to matters of war and money.

Reagan thought there were "moderates" in Iran during Iran-Contra. He was proven wrong, just as Obama will be proven wrong about Afghanistan. There is nothing "moderate" about Wahhabism, the Saudi-based religion of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

If by "moderate" you mean Taliban elements that can be bought, this is what will happen: they will take our money, make public pledge they hate the Arabs of Al-Qaeda, and then proceed to attack us because they hate us as foreigners.

While we are spending $1.3 billion in Taliban payoffs (as reported by the Toronto Star), the American people suffer for lack of a viable safety net. The US will go the way of other empires in Afghanistan.

As other DUers have warned, we can choose to stay in Afghanistan or we can choose to concentrate our efforts in saving the American people from economic ruin. We can't do both!

7. The Indiana Democratic Party did not even run a candidate against Lugar in 2006. Do you know why?
Edited on Sun Nov-29-09 11:31 AM by IndianaGreen
Because the national Democratic Party did not give them any money to mount a challenge, that's why!

13. IMO there was no excuse in letting Lugar go unchallenged.
It's my guess if we asked Howard Dean what he would have done, he would say, "Recruit a good, smart, tough candidate, and let's at least put a dent in the son-of-a-bitch."

and the Bayhs hold millions of dollars in health industry and Big Pharma stocks.

No surprise that Evan Bayh opposes single payer, and prefers exchanges to a viable public option.

18. Lugar is one of my senators.
The reason we can't run anyone against him in Indiana is pretty simple....can you say red neck heaven?

He is a senile crackpot and needs to be replaced, maybe this time there are enough enlightened minds in Indiana to make a difference.

(but i wouldn't hold my breath.)

35. Lugar is NOT a senile crackpot
I saw the interview this morning. He was sane and thoughtful as usual, except for the comment about putting HCR on hold which was very disappointing but not surprising (Lugar is sane but does wander too far from the fold). But from here to labeling one of the very few wise and considerate Rs left in congress a crackpot is a long way.

23. This Has Been The Constant Refrain For The Last 45 Years
At some point you have to ask, if not now when. Sen. Lugar has taken his eye off the ball anyway because the health reform measure in the Senate now is less costly than putting it on the back burner as Lugar wants. Making matters worse seems like a strange argument for Lugar to be making.

36. Agree, disappoining
since Lugar is definitely not one of the psychos. But I assume that this is one of the key points the Rs want to push ("Now is NOT the time for HRC"), and Lugar while sane, is not a rebel.

28. No, Lugar, let's do it the other way around. For one thing it is foreign
intervention that has caused every other empire that ever existed to fall. They could not afford both home and the empire. (The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers by Paul Kennedy and Empire by Chalmers Johnson) We are on the brink of that cliff now - we are borrowing money to fight these stupid wars. We need to return to the needs here at home now before we cannot return at all because we are totally broke.

at the expense of the good of the welfare of the people of this country.

Do you notice how there's rarely any debate on whether we can afford ANYTHING the military asks?

Do you want obsolete toys that may have worked in a 1940s-type conflict, but don't address the types of conflicts we're currently involved in? No problem.

We realize that our occupations in Afghanistan and Iraq have done nothing to make the world more secure. What's that? You want more troops? No problem.

People like Sen. Lugnut are insecure about their manhood--or lack of it. So, they deal with it by advocating unlimited spending on military weapons.

And the hell with costly things like universal healthcare.
