Hondurans cast absentee votes in Miami

Scores of Hondurans in Miami cast absentee ballots Sunday in the hopes that their votes would help resolve a worrisome political crisis in Honduras.

``It's time for Honduras to return to normalcy,'' Sylvia Martinez, 52, said as she stood at the front of the line.

The national vote on Sunday comes exactly five months after the military in Honduras toppled left-leaning President Manuel ``Mel'' Zelaya and a caretaker government swiftly seized power. World leaders condemned the coup, but exile activists in South Florida welcomed the shakeup, hailing it as a victory against the region's spread of populism.

The interest here in what's happening in Honduras was clear Sunday.

Before the poll opened at the Polish American Club of Miami at 7:30 am, some 75 voters had showed up. Supporters for the two main candidates handed out literature and led voters to sing the national anthem. Honduras' blue-and-white flag was on effusive display.

1. The "worrisome political crisis" is the need to STOP efforts to...

have the gov't pay some attention to the vast majority of its citizens, rather than only the interests of the rich.

2. So populism is evil?
"..hailing it as a victory against the region's spread of populism"

Isn't that another way of saying Democracy is evil?
If a leader is popular with the majority of people it means he is popular with the poor and middle classes, who represent the majority in any nation.
They want an "unpopular" leader who will abuse the poor and middle classes to the benefit of the rich. And they want the USA's blessings. And now they have that. They're set.
