Sarah Palin signed copies of her book, hugged fans, and took pictures with a cheering crowd as she prepared for a benefit race during her Thanksgiving visit to Washington state.

The former Republican vice-presidential candidate is spending the holiday with relatives in Richland, Wash., before resuming her nationwide book tour over the weekend.

She participated in a 5K race to benefit the Red Cross on Thursday morning, surrounded by a crowd of cheering fans. She didn't finish the race, opting to leave early to avoid more crowds, said Kennewick police Officer Michelle Pitts.

A good runner--as Palin was portrayed to be in the "I'm a Runner!" feature in Runner's World this summer--will finish a 5K in under 30 minutes. I cannot imagine ANY runner who would start a 5K, jostle elbow-to-elbow with the starting pack for the first two kilometers, and then drop out 10- to 15 minutes from finishing "to avoid more crowds." C'mon.

On the other hand, if you're looking for a reason to quit and have a hard time being honest when you've screwed up, "avoiding more crowds" is about as good as anything.

Of all race distances, the 5K is one of the trickiest. Inexperienced runners will often think it's so short that not much training is needed and show up unprepared on race day. Then they start too fast for their level of conditioning and, somewhere around the second mile mark, wind up winded with a maxed out heart rate. Then they drop out. It's pretty common, and I'm reasonably sure that's what happened to Sarah Palin.

Long lines of people who had waited hours in the cold and rain and who spent their hard-earned money on her book were left holding the bag. People were pissed, and rightfully so. When you agree to see X-number of people (wristbands were handed out) you STAY until they are all seen. The Borders clerk I talked to seemed to be both ashamed and disgusted at the same time.

These examples show just how inherently unqualified she is for anything. When the going gets tough...well, Sarah gets going.
