Ahmadinejad hails anti-US 'brothers' on Venezuela trip
Source: AFP

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed Wednesday beside firebrand President Hugo Chavez that Iran and Venezuela would "stand together until the end" in the face of US "imperialism."

Ending a tour of Latin American allies, Ahmadinejad praised his "brave brother" Chavez, saying: "Today the people of Venezuela and Iran, friends and brothers in the trench warfare against imperialism, are resisting.

"We'll stand together until the end," he yelled, raising Chavez's hand in front of the television cameras and shouting in Spanish: "Viva Venezuela! Viva Chavez!"

Before arriving in Caracas late Tuesday Ahmadinejad was in Bolivia, where he and President Evo Morales, another close Chavez ally, hailed their own alliance against "imperialism," meaning the United States.

6. Imperialism doesn't mean just the US government.
It also means the governments of most of Europe, Japan, etc. - i.e., the developed countries with living standards derived in large part from past and present extreme exploitation of the labor and other resources of developing countries like Iran and Venezuela. Imperialism paved the way for someone like Ahmedinejad to have a mass base in Iran.

I think it's makes sense for Venezuela to develop good commercial and diplomatic relations with other developing countries as a way to protect its national security against imperialism; on the other hand, ideological affinity for the Islamic republic is taking it much too far. While it pleases me that Chavez, Che Guevara, and the ideals of socialism are gaining currency again among students and others in Iran in large part due to these close relations, I do not think it is principled to portray Iran as a bastion of support for the oppressed of the world.

7. Ahmadinejad deserves credit
Ahmadinejad deserves credit for standing up to the big powers that are selfishly trying to deny Iran its right to develop and use nuclear technology.

10. I don't know if it was selfish of Western Powers
But I don't know how anyone could possibly give him any respect after what he did in the elections earlier this year? Especially on this forum.

12. Views on situations like this can get a bit simplistic here
When I made that "but all the protestors are CIA!" snark upthread, I was joking, but there's plenty of people here who sincerely believed that sort of thing during the election protests.
