Catholic order pays out for abuse
Source: bbc

A Catholic religious order is to supply a 161m euros (£145m) package of measures as reparation for child abuse in Ireland.

The Christian Brothers said the decision had been taken in response to the Ryan report which revealed decades of abuse at religious institutions.
...
No real names, of perpetrators, appeared in the Ryan report after the Christian Brothers took legal action in 2004 to keep the identities of all of its members, dead or alive, out of the report.

More than 2,000 people told the commission they had suffered physical and sexual abuse as children in the institutions, which included schools and orphanages.

washing the shame of the crimes and the twice shameful attempt to cover up the names of the criminals with money. well, better than holy water - at least more effective.

i would like to see more of the "brothers" behind the bars of a jail.

3. Oh, I get it. Now, I know why the Catholic Church is against abortion.
Women have to keep pumping out those babies so that the church can abuse them.

but you DO know that independent sources say that molesters account for only about six percent of priests, right?

That is six percent too many -- but it DOES leave a full 94 percent innocent of the crime.

16. The Catholic Church could've avoided controversy if they had...
cooperated with authorities and victims to bring pedophile priests to justice.

Instead their official policy is to cover up the crime and move pedophile priests to another diocese. Or even to other countries to avoid authorities. And if that isn't bad enough, the Church equates homosexuality with pedophilia and claims that barring gay men from the priesthood will eliminate predator priests.

They're more concerned about money and bad press than the people hurt by their employees. The Church deserves much worse than it is getting IMO.

18. The LEADERS facilitated it, and the POPE promoted those who covered it up
If apparitions were ever real it would seem the popes would have seen some stern ones by now and straightened themselves out. And I suppose it is God's plan to overrun the Earth with starving people it can no longer support? We already know that Jesus hates universal healthcare.

Don't confuse the natural positive effects of people of good will forming a community with some manifestation of dogmatic truth. And conflation of moral rectitude with religious adherence may have been mankind's first Big Lie.

Perhaps YOU should not confuse the misdeeds of some with the need to prosylytize an anti-religion agenda. Islam's Sharia law isn't too great either...Yet I saw people here falling all over themselves the other day defending Islam.

As for your assertions that the "LEADERS" facilitated it and the POPE promoted those who covered it up", any links?

P.S. Apparitions are real. I saw one, but it wasn't religious.

One out of 20 Catholic Priests is a pedophile?

:wow:

Do you know how staggeringly high that ratio is?

24. It's a big church . . . and most of Ireland KNEW . . . how did the church not know?
Those who have done no wrong become complicit when they are helping to cover this up --

as some said in the reviews of the case . . .

And, let's not overlook that the ENTIRE HIERARCHY of the church is complicit not only in

not reporting these acts to police, but in cover it up -- and fighting to keep it covered up!

that works with great passion against the equal rights of good people. They are nothing but hypocritical scum. The entire organization headed by Ratsy is a criminal hate group in my opinion.

7. Ah, following in the footsteps of Phoney Mahoney
Out here in Los Angeles, Cardinal Phoney Mahoney has been flipping up his TItle Deed Cards to pay judgements to the victims of his pedophiliac priests that he shuffled from parish to parish. Lots of Church properties have gone up on the block. And there is plenty more where that came from.

Phoney Mahoney belongs in jail along with every fucking molester he covered up for.

9. Given the church's war on communion against pols who are too socially
liberal, is it any surprise that there's a severe, growing, priest shortage? and that churches are far emptier now than 10 yrs ago?

Maybe if they opened the Vatican vault in the library, and sold some of the most precious volumes, parchments, and books that their priests burned 500, even 1500 years ago, they could pay off all this worthy and appropriate debt they are taking on.

26. In Ireland the taxpayers are largely picking up the tab for this abuse . . .
but they're not prosecuting anyone -- not holding anyone responsible --

some of the Courts were involved, for instance, in shuffling kids off to these

schools!

If there's is one thing the church loves it's $$$$$$$$$$ and holding onto it!!

12. it's ironic how much the church resembles the GOP lately.
both are losing followers fast do to their self-righteous war of moral hypocrisy.

i equate this to a Palin speech or book signing. every time there's any news about either it just drives more people away.

Apparently, it's poverty with loopholes.

There are some good people who are still Catholic, and they should have left the Church long ago.

23. 170,000 kids went thru those institutions -- many of the "Courts" were helping supply kids . . .
some simply homeless -- some had parents who weren't taking care of them --

some of the girls had been raped and pregnant --

Less than 1,000 of the former children were interviewed --
