Toyota recalls 110,000 Tundras
David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau

Washington -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it will recall 110,000 older Toyota Tundra pickups in cold weather states, as federal officials urged motorists to remove spare tires due to excessive corrosion.

The tires could fall off the bottom of the trucks, causing a hazard. The recall announcement comes after 15 reports of tires falling off and is the latest safety issue to dog the Japanese automaker.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told owners of some 2000-2003 Toyota Tundra trucks "to remove spare tires mounted underneath the body of the vehicle. Excessive corrosion due to road salts can cause the rear cross-member of the vehicle frame to fail and allow the spare tire to fall onto the roadway at any time, creating a road hazard for other vehicles."

NHTSA recommended that owners remove the spare tires before taking the vehicles to dealers to be fixed.

NHTSA said the corrosion may damage the rear brake lines and lead to brake system failure.

10. I would imagine Toyota operates the very same way as the Big 3 when it comes to parts
constantly demanding lower costs and producing these lower cost parts with cheap labor and cheap material. I wonder how many of the big shareholders in this country drive Toyotas?

6. Ford had to recall 4.5 million vehicles just last month
for faulty cruise controls that could lead to a fire hazard. Recalls are almost routine for the big automakers. and the bigger you are, the more problems you are going to have. it's not necessarily an indicator of a bad company, its just something that is bound to happen once in a while due to the high complexity of the product.

its more of a problem if the company simply ignored the problem and FAILED to do a recall when one is called for.

7. Toyota has known about this problem for YEARS!
I had a friend who worked for a lemon buyback company and he told me about this issue years ago. Toyota had hired his company to purchase these vehicles back at very high prices from the owners to avoid exposure.

8. So did Ford
...the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this was the eighth recall (for Ford), involving a total of 16 million Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500) vehicles, concerning the cruise control deactivation switch manufactured by Texas Instruments (TXN, Fortune 500).

The faulty switch can leak hydraulic fluid, overheat, smoke and then burn, and risks causing a fire even when the ignition is turned off, parked and unattended, the NHTSA said.

The risk is elevated for 1.1 million Windstars that were subject to a government investigation, said Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood....

9. Uh....
The idea of the Toyota buyback was to AVOID a recall.

11. Toyotas and Nissan even older Mazda`s when they were built inJapan
always have had major rust problems. This should not be a surprise to anyone.I am a used car dealer and have seen rust even on southern Japanese vehicles.I have seen them so rusty that they just fold up in the middle or put on a lift just to leave the wheels sitting on the floor. Some dealers will spray undercoating on the frames to hide rust.

15. Fact, you can use a percentage of recycled metal in vehicle construction
GM and Ford typically put the metal into brake rotors and drums, which is a primary reason for excessive rust and lowered longevity on these parts. Chrysler spread it out on the manufacture of real axle assemblies.

Guess where Toyota puts their recycled steel?

17. Buy you a Ford and be happy
safe too. Remember when goodyear tried every way in the book to blame the tire blow outs on the explorer. Goodyear fixed the tires no more rollovers.

22. around where?
the starvation of what and where and how? I have my way of being in Australia am probably nowhere near you, and am quite well fed actually with a proper diet quite well informed that doesn't include petrol consumption, so I can actually eat good food. yet you head it with the words must be nice to live somewhere that is possible? try in your own mind first to find a possible state, and then open up to the possible everywhere and anywhere you can live then with a freedom as you explore your bodies potential to move around with pedal power on a bicycle or a walk that takes hours, or a horse ride that outlasts increasing novelty. innovate!! explore your potential, who is to limit you or me but own our selves at the end of the day or especially at the beginning, when you think positively and expansively your world opens up to you with the real possibilities!!
