SC Gov Faces 37 Charges He Broke State Ethics Laws
Source: Associated Press

"South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford faces ethics charges he broke state laws more than three dozen times by violating rules on airplane travel and campaign money, according to details of the allegations released Monday.

It's up to the state attorney general to decide whether to file criminal charges. Sanford's lawyers have claimed the allegations involve minor and technical aspects of the law.

The second-term Republican governor has been under scrutiny since he vanished for five days over the summer, reappearing to tearfully admit to an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina he later called his "soul mate."

A series of Associated Press investigations into his travel showed the governor had for years used state airplanes for political and personal trips, flown in pricey commercial airline seats despite a low-cost travel requirement and failed to disclose trips on planes owned by friends and donors."

1. I don't support impeachment of Sanford
Keeping him in office to languish as a lame duck enhances Democratic chances of winning the office in 2010. Keeping him around makes it easier to tie the gubernatorial nominee to Sanford.

6. Interesting thought, but he's term-limited anyway

And there's no less than four Republicans who have committed to the 2010 GOP primary to replace Sanford.

Might as well impeach him and make it harder on the state GOP to pull itself out of this mess.

8. Yes I'm aware of that
I tried to word my statement in a way that indicated I knew that he was term limited. I guess I didn't make myself clear.

Having him languish in office would cast a pall upon the party;s efforts to hold the office in the election.

5.  We know all those Christian Republicans get a pass from
God.

Larry Craig, Mark Sanford, etc. they are all the same.

11. Um... It was her other boyfriend who leaked the emails.
I don't think he meant as much to her as she did to him. See "Love: unrequited."

12. But he's one of THE FAMILY. Jesus told him to do whatever he wants.
Not exactly sarcasm, since that's what the Family believes.
