Over 100 icebergs drifting to N.Zealand: official

SYDNEY — More than 100, and possibly hundreds, of Antarctic icebergs are floating towards New Zealand in a rare event which has prompted a shipping warning, officials said on Monday.

An Australian Antarctic Division glaciologist said the ice chunks, spotted by satellite photography, had passed the Auckland Islands and were heading towards the main South Island, about 450 kilometres (280 miles) northeast.
Scientist Neal Young said more than 100 icebergs -- some measuring more than 200 metres (650 feet) across -- were seen in just one cluster, indicating there could be hundreds more.

He said they were the remains of a massive ice floe which split from the Antarctic as sea and air temperatures rise due to global warming.

FIRST SIGNS OF MELTING SEEN IN EAST ANTARCTICA

Earth's last great icy citadel, the East Antarctica Ice Sheet, is beginning to crumble.

Antarctica's western ice sheet has been under siege from global warming for some time, with billions of tons of ice melting into the ocean each year and contributing to sea level rise. By contrast, the east has appeared to hold out, its mass staying stable.

Now a new set of satellite measurements indicate the East may have begun to succumb to warmer temperatures, losing as much as 57 billion tons of ice a year since 2006. There is still a lot of uncertainty in the readings, but if the readings hold up under scrutiny, it would mark an important change in the world's largest ice sheet.

http://news.discovery.com/earth/east-antarctica-glacier-melting.htmlThe team's results in western Antarctica match up well with previous studies, which have found that the region is shedding around 196 billion tons of ice each year.

13. I would take a closer look at this
and if true would not be good for those of us who believe in climate change. I would not reject this outright.

26. Excellent, ty
All I am saying is that I do not react strictly on a tribal line. My side is fully capable of lying and the other side is also capable of the truth. It isn't ever black or white with me.

"However, Jones denied manipulating evidence and insisted his comment had been taken out of context. 'The word 'trick' was used here colloquially, as in a clever thing to do. It is ludicrous to suggest that it refers to anything untoward,' he said in a statement Saturday."

"The University of East Anglica said that information published on the Internet had been selected deliberately to undermine 'the strong consensus that human activity is affecting the world's climate in ways that are potentially dangerous.'

"'The selective publication of some stolen e-mails and other papers taken out of context is mischievous and cannot be considered a genuine attempt to engage with this issue in a responsible way,' the university said in a statement."

14. The interesting thing here -other than your propaganda is that GW (George Bush) and GW (global
warming) have the same initials.

How appropriate.

29. The ironic thing is, the astroturfers and deniers accuse the people that believe the overwhelming
scientific evidence that human caused global warming climate change is for real as being "chicken littles." I see it as the other way around, their denial of the obvious as being emotionally based on the fear of change. The consequences of this being a reality is too great or horrific for their sensitivities to handle, so they've decided to live in denial.

This doesn't include the most wealthy and powerful at the very top, I believe most of them know it's happening but they believe in riding out the storm while the rest of Earth's population gets culled down to a more manageable one billion or so people; if that many survive. But in the final analysis, I believe they're deluding themselves as well.

I totally agree with your final sentence.

Last week, I was watching a news clip on NZ Network One. Helicopter firms are hoping to land tourists on the bergs like they did on one a few years ago.

20. So that's how the last ice age started. The icebergs all ganged up and moved north
bringing freezing temps and glaciers to the Northern Hemisphere.

Mystery solved.

25. People had better hope that this is an exaggeration.
> Earth's last great icy citadel, the East Antarctica Ice Sheet,

The EAIS is supposed to be the one that is gaining mass (you know, the
one that the deniers love to point to when trying to counteract the
implications of the West Antarctica & Greenland Ice Sheets melting).

It is the largest ice sheet on the planet.

We *really* don't want to see this "beginning to crumble".
