Army asks Palin not to give speech at book signing

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin promises to limit her enthusiasm during her visit to North Carolina's Fort Bragg.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate planned to sign copies of her new memoir at a post store Monday. Army officials say Palin will not make a speech, pose for photos, or personalize notes in the books she signs.

The Army worried Palin's appearance would prompt political grandstanding against President Barack Obama. That fear initially led post commanders to keep news organizations from covering Palin's appearance, though the restrictions were later dropped.

Fort Bragg spokesman Tom McCollum tells WTVD-TV that sales of Palin's book at the post store have been weak so far.

I'm a senior Army officer at Bragg and have never voted Repub in my life, I'm a lifelong Democrat. I avoided the north end of post all day just so that I wouldn't come anywhere close to coming into contact with the Rogue. Late last week the Post had a new Corps Commander assume command. Not sure where he falls in the political spectrum. Bragg is open to just about anybody willing to produce a photo id and be subjected to a vehicle search. Hopefully there was a low turnout and she didn't sell many books. Lots of authors of all variety/subject come through the Post Exchange for book signings each year.

It will go on from there, no doubt. The open question will be whether the Army will try to cover their cowardice with the lame excuse that they didn't want to play into her hands by making her into a victim, or if they'll pretend that nothing untoward happened at all.

Not usually particularly controversial. Gene Simmons was at Fort Bragg a few years ago, and I seem to remember the Black Hawk Down guy doing one, too. The exchange or book store manager usually dies it. I imagine the post commander can override.

Enthusiasm is not what lying all the time is called. Sarah's purpose for going to Fort Bragg is to undermine the President it's that simple. They had better guard Sarah because her mission is to go rogue. I would like to call it "Going Stupid". Whose next with a book signing at a military post store, Limbaugh, Rove, Beck? If Palin can't make a speech, pose for photos (with a wink), or personalize notes maybe she'll just cancel.
