Bush Tells Evangelicals He Will Fight Gay Marriage
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) on Thursday sought to solidify his standing with evangelical Christians by restating support for a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage as part of his championship of conservative causes.

"I will defend the sanctity of marriage against activist courts and local officials who want to redefine marriage. The union of a man and woman is the most enduring human institution," Bush, himself a born-again Christian, told the National Association of Evangelicals Convention in Colorado via satellite from the White House.

<snip>

Bush seized on the issue after legal developments in San Francisco, where thousands of marriage licenses have been issued to gays and lesbians, and in Massachusetts, where the state's highest court ruled gay couples had the right to wed.

The move could help bolster his support among conservative Christians, a critical base for Bush, a Republican, in the November presidential election. With some polls showing him trailing Democratic challenger John Kerry (news - web sites), analysts say Bush will need to energize his base.

1. he's just flapping his gums
As has been discovered by DUers when this first came out, there are at least 45 "no" votes lined up in the Senate, with a possibility of as many as 60 "no" votes based on the past voting records of the undecideds.

The FMA is DOA.

3. "Do you believe in the separation of church and state?"
this is a great wedge issue for Dems.

Someone has to ask him, in front of live cameras (kerry during a debate?), this question:

"Do you believe in the separation of church and state?"

No matter which way he answers he's going to alienate part of the Republican party.

Say yes, and the religious right will go bonkers. Say no, and the secular, libertarian and moderate Republicans will be turned off.

This is such an important issue, and the republican party is SO dominated by the religious right, that the Dems have to figure out a way to make it an issue!

4. OK, eight months before the election he's still "firming up the base."
Do we need any further evidence that this guy is running scared?

5. What GW really means.
"I will defend the sanctity of marriage against activist courts and local officials who want to redefine marriage. The union of a man and woman is the most enduring human institution," Bush, himself a born-again Christian, told the National Association of Evangelicals Convention in Colorado via satellite from the White House.

This is what GW really means,

"I will discriminate against Gays and Lesbians by constitutionaly barring courts and local officals who want to fully end discrimintation against adult Americans whom want to get marrried. The union of two men or two women is evil, and our bigotry must fuel are hatred to stop them."

7. I, for one, am pleased
that the person residing in the White House has so completely solved/resolved the many issues facing the world that he now has time to pursue this most burning of issues!
After all, what could be more important to our collective existence than this issue? Hunger, disease, poverty and education all are cured and no longer problems in the world. Good Job Mr. Bush! (sarcasm off)

9. Jesus on divorce:
"It was because you were so hard-hearted that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. I say to you that whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery"
Matthew 19

Jesus on homosexuality:

(Nothing)

Why aren't the fundies pushing to make divorce illegal?
Seems they only follow the parts Jesus' teachings that are convenient for them.

13. Calling shrub born-again is very puzzling to me.
He is a United Methodist. So am I. While I do not agree with many of the positions my church takes, I know that we do not act like born-again fundies. We are a pretty sedate bunch.

Some of our theological positions are not the same as the born again crowd's positions. For example, we are promised resurrection, but not direct entry into heaven upon our deaths.

When Jesus came back, and showed up in a locked room, how did he get there? Why didn't his disciples recognize him? Because he was a spirit. That is what I learned, as a United Methodist. We seem to have a different take on communion from the born-again crowd, too.

I have never heard any other Methodist claim to be born-again. Shrub is all wet, as usual.

14. Very simple: it's all about expedience
The Chimp is about as Christian as I am. Actually I'm probably more, since at one time I really was a born again. He and the rest of his neocon ilk claim the mantle of evangelicalism and use the correct fundie code words as a matter of political expediency, to fire up the fundie base that's hijacked the GOP.

The BFEE worships Mammon, and nothing else.
