Army keeping media from Palin event

RALEIGH, N.C. — Army officials plan to prevent media from covering Sarah Palin's appearance at Fort Bragg on Monday, saying they fear the event will turn into political grandstanding against President Barack Obama.

Fort Bragg spokesman Tom McCollum told The Associated Press on Thursday that Army officials had decided to keep media away from Palin's book promotion at the North Carolina base.

Other members of the public would be permitted to attend, however.

McCollum said the Army did not want the event to become a platform for Palin supporters to express political opinions "directed against the commander in chief."

I haven't posted in many of the Palin threads. But this one makes me LOL!

Ft Bragg reigning in Failin's supporters.

Good job!

6. I am with you.
Why is she on a military base promoting her book of lies? This makes no sense to me, and she should be doing her "liars" tour off base, not on base!

7. I don't know
and they haven't said yet why she's stopping there.

If I were to speculate, I'd say a "fan" in uniform invited her, but someone else, also in uniform, decided to tone it down.

8. Maybe they are planning a military coup, with Palin leading the junta...
...and shooting liberals and 'perky journalists' from military helicopter gunships.

All kidding aside, this is literally the wet dream of tens (hundreds?) of thousands of hardcore rightists.

It is right out in the open: They are stockpiling ammo, praying for god to smite the president, and talking about the fabric of this country being so far gone as to put America in a 'pre-revolutionary war' state.

10. I can't imagine Failin is happy
about it, though. She's living for the media attention.

She's going to be robbed of the chance to stand next to uniforms and look all mavericky and chiefy-like.

11. Why are they allowing this on base?
When I was in uniform, I had to be very careful about what I said in regards to W.

I was even questioned about my air america bumper sticker.

14. Palln is PROMOTING her Fort Hood visit on her FB page
Here is the first part of her newest 'note'

Quote:

Go Rogue With the Rest of Us!

Details of the second half of the Going Rogue book tour!

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in every stop on the tour, but I'm especially looking forward to meeting our brave men and women in uniform at Fort Hood. I'm joining the efforts of many others by donating my royalties from the book sales during our stop at Fort Hood to the families of the victims whose lives have been forever changed by the tragic events of November 5th. I am humbled to be able to join the larger effort called "Community Response to 11/5," which was established by the Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter of the Association of the US Army (AUSA). You can read more about their great efforts here: http://www.forthoodausa.org/.
SNIP.... End Quote
---------------

She is SO disgraceful and disgusting in MY book!
I can't imagine that her 'royalties' from the book sales would total more than a couple hundred or thousand dollars. So I think she was banking on exchanging her royalties for the PHOTO-OPS that she thought she'd be getting there!

16. Also...
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 04:53 PM by Tx4obama
Something that the media did not pick up on...

When Palin originally released the schedule of her book tour (which was a week or so after the shootings) all the towns had dates and time listed EXCEPT for Fort Hood which said 'to be announced'. She said that the Fort Hood stop was scheduled 'before' the shootings but I DO NOT THINK SO because if it had been there would have already been a place and time decided upon like all the other stops.

Gene Simmons was here in 2006.

Other authors have been invited by AAFES to appear. They usually have a military book to push, it's usually cons, not always. Everyone always has a product to push.

Whether it is appropriate is another issue, but yes, other authors have book signings.

Author Bernie Harberts:

*Friday, November 16

"Woody and Maggie Walk Across America" discussion and book signing
Fort Bragg PX
Fort Bragg, NC

"In many respects, Byrrd operates similarly to the news agencies that service PXs; it's responsible for maintaining the racks and keeping them filled. As in the main exchanges, the store managers have a lot of authority over what goes into the stores. "Individual managers," said Williams, "will grant you five feet of space, and some will grant you 25 feet." Part of the problem, as he sees it, is that store managers are not accountable for sales. "They make not a penny more," said Williams, "if they sell a thousand books or one book."

The selection is ultimately up to those same store managers, in association with the AAFES book buyer. "We have to get clearance on every book," said Williams. "We can't initiate orders, we can only suggest. In a way it's similar to a general bookstore. Once in a very great while AAFES suggests a book that we carry. Recently the Gen. Wesley Clark book, Waging Modern War: Bosnia, Kosovo, and the Future of Combat , was suggested."

Despite the fact that Williams successfully sponsored Black Hawk Down author Mark Bowden in several military venues when the book came out in hardcover from Grove Atlantic, he characterizes such an event as "a very difficult thing to arrange." Transportation can be costly and timing is very important, with the best slots on payday weekends and grand openings."

18. This move will just make the right-wing more paranoid. It is stupid
to try to hide the truth from the press and the American people.

Fact is that Palin has a lot of support out there. She's stupid. She's all the bad things we on DU think about her, but she has a lot of support. She's kind of a fad. The worst of it is that the more that people try to keep her out of the limelight, the more attention she will get -- and the more sympathy.

Obama needs to become more responsive to the problems of the American people in his own way. That is the best way to undercut Palin -- by replacing Geithner and Summers and getting some economic advisers who understand the needs of Main Street, who can figure out how to get jobs back for the American people.

24. Media blocked from Palin signing at Fort Bragg
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 07:07 PM by cal04
Source: Associated Press

The U.S. Army plans to prevent media from covering Sarah Palin's appearance at Fort Bragg, fearing the event will turn into political grandstanding against President Barack Obama, officials said Thursday.

Fort Bragg spokesman Tom McCollum told The Associated Press that the military post's garrison commander and other Army officials had decided to keep media away from Palin's book signing, which will not include a speech. He said the Army did not want the Monday event to become a platform to express political opinions "directed against the commander in chief."

"The main reason is to stop this from turning into a political platform," he said. "There are Army regulations that basically prohibit military reservations from becoming political platforms by politicians."

He said only one politician can use that platform, "and that person does it as our commander in chief."
