Former Bush press secretary Perino appointed to Obama administration post
By Jordan Fabian - 11/18/09 07:22 PM ET

Former press secretary to President George W. Bush Dana Perino was appointed as a member of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) Wednesday evening.

The board governs all government sponsored, non-military international broadcasting outlets, such as Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia, and Alhurra. The BBG is a nine member, bipartisan panel.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) urged the Obama administration to appoint Perino.

Perino is currently a Chief Issues Counselor for the United States at Burson-Marsteller, an international public relations firm, and is a contributor to Fox News.

1. Its a bipartisan panel, and she filled a Repug slot.
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 12:07 AM by FrenchieCat
She's a dumbat dumbass and not very effective, assertive or articulate.
Could have been much worse.
If it helps get some of our judges confirmed as a favor,
it was most likely worth it.

it was "cute". Gee, bipartisan or not, this was a lousy appointment to a position involving international image.

43. Agreed. She was a good choice. The key word is ineffective.
They had to appoint a Republican. Any Republican that espoused acceptable policies would be disavowed by the GOP. That Perino was requested means some quid pro quo, which will be to our advantage, since she is the equivalent of an empty suit.

to confirm her and nothing stops the Republicans from disavowing anyone at any time anyway. She does not have to be a genius to push Bushie goals. Heaven knows Dummya wasn't. And, if the correct Democrats have been picked, no Republican agenda will succeed anyway.

As far as getting a quid pro quo from McConnell for this appointment, I doubt any was promised. All Obama needs is for McConnell to tell the media that Perino got the appointment in exchange for XYZ. Even if McConnell did promise something, there's no guaranty that he can or will deliver.

44. There are Republicans who, unlike Perino. are neither Bushies nor conservatives.
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 10:06 AM by No Elephants
If I were in Obama's shoes, and I did have to appoint a Republican, I might have tried really to interest as many Republican Senator in the job as I possibly could, especially if I could find some from states where a Democratic Governor would appoint the replacement. Failing that, I'd probably appoint the most liberal Republicans I could find.

Don't know why on earth appointing Perino, as opposed to a non-Bushie Republican, would help get Obama's judicial nominees confirmed. Even as speculation that seems like a stretch. Even the Republicans have tried hard to disassociate themselves from Bushco and they are never likely to do us any favors, especially not for appointing a Bushie to a slot that, according to you, has to go one Republican or another in any case.

27. Whaaat? You classify our image abroad as insignifigant, and think perino didn't
"lie". Are you kidding? She only sent reporters to other people because she is dumb as a stump and her artictulate image consists of perky blode looks and ability to smile. Gimme a break. Remind you of anyone else who claims a degree in journalism??????? I shudder at the thought of her assisting in "crafting " any image of the USA.

28. I didn't intend to diminish the US inage abroad. If you understood it that way,
you were wrong. She's ONE of a panel and replacing another Pub seat. The reason I said it would keep her out of domestic stuff is because her power as only 1 on the panel is small, and I seiously doubt any people from any foreign coutries will ever even know her name. HERE within the US, she IS known, and I believe she can do more damage encouraging the remaining Pubs to become activists. I'd rather not have that!

29. She adds another Bushie voice to the mix, and it isn't a question of her being "known.
No one will "see" anyone on the panel but their handiwork will be on display. This could ultimately be more dangerous than perino attempting to influence domestic policy because I don't think she actually could. Here she is given license to meddle internationally. Her perspective was not needed on that panel. There had to be someone else more trustworthy and it pays further "respect" to the Bush Admin..

49. The Hillary folk always seem to assume that Hillary would have done better than Obama has.
As the song says, "It ain't necessarily so."

It seems more likely that she would have done about the same, or worse. We'll never know, one way or another, so it's easy to claim imaginary victory. However, Obama has loaded his administration with Clinton re-treads, Hillary and Rahm not being the least of them. And his other advisors, like Axelrod and Plouffe, seem superior to those who were advised her.

sends a mixed message, at best. Anything from "I was overconfident about Obama's re-election" to "I didn't feel well" to "I hate Obama." Basically, staying home gets to mean anything the pundits and the media want it to mean.

Broadcasting Board of Governors.

The board oversees U.S. international civilian broadcasting entities, including Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia, among others. Its mission is "to promote freedom and democracy and enhance understanding." Board members are responsible for "evaluating the mission and operation of its broadcast entities; assessing the quality, effectiveness, and professional integrity of its broadcasters; and determining the addition or deletion of language services," according to the agency's web site.

The taxpayer-funded agency had a budget of about $717.4 million in 2009.

54. Why? Is it Democratic Underground or Obama Underground?
For some of us, putting a Democratic agenda into effect is the issue, not Obama, regardless of what he does or doesn't do. In other words, political principles are more important than any individual politician (especially when his next election is still a few years away).

You and I differ in that, IMO, there should be no place at DU, or anywhere in the Democratic Party, for trying to censor other Democrats. If you believe the poster is actually a Republican, though, that is a different story. I'm right beside you on shuting them up here.

I thought it was just a general criticism of how he was running his Presidency, but it would not have been deleted if that were all it had been. I don't usually miss the gist of a post by that much, but I must have read it way too quickly.
